biome book report The forest biome. A Wisconsin forest. Life on Earth continued to evolve, and in impact assignment model, the late Paleozoic, gymnosperms appeared. By the Triassic Period (245-208 mya), gymnosperms dominated the Earth's forests. In the Cretaceous Period (144-65m mya), the first flowering plants (angiosperms) appeared. They evolved together with insects, birds, and mammals and radiated rapidly, dominating the landscape by the end of the Period. The landscape changed again during the Pleistocene Ice Ages #151; the surface of the planet that had been dominated by famous english, tropical forests for impact assignment model millions of years changed, and temperate forests spread in the Northern Hemisphere. And Oranges Comparison Essay! Today, forests occupy approximately one-third of Earth's land area, account for over two-thirds of the impact model leaf area of land plants, and contain about 70% of carbon present in living things. English Essayists! They have been held in reverence in folklore and worshipped in thesis impact assignment decision, ancient religions. However, forests are becoming major casualties of civilization as human populations have increased over the past several thousand years, bringing deforestation, pollution, and industrial usage problems to this important biome. Present-day forest biomes, biological communities that are dominated by trees and essay, other woody vegetation (Spurr and Barnes 1980), can be classified according to decision, numerous characteristics, with seasonality being the most widely used.

Distinct forest types also occur within each of these broad groups. There are three major types of forests, classed according to latitude: Tropical forests are characterized by the greatest diversity of help essays, species. They occur near the equator, within the area bounded by latitudes 23.5 degrees N and 23.5 degrees S. One of the major characteristics of tropical forests is impact model decision, their distinct seasonality: winter is absent, and only two seasons are present (rainy and dry). The length of daylight is 12 hours and varies little. From left: Olympic Peninsula rain forest, Washington; Patria River, Costa Rica; Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar; Hawaiian forest. Temperature is on average 20-25° C and varies little throughout the that year: the impact decision average temperatures of the three warmest and descriptive 2011, three coldest months do not differ by more than 5 degrees. Assignment! Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, with annual rainfall exceeding 200 cm. Soil is nutrient-poor and acidic. Decomposition is rapid and soils are subject to heavy leaching. Canopy in tropical forests is multilayered and continuous, allowing little light penetration.

Flora is famous, highly diverse: one square kilometer may contain as many as 100 different tree species. Impact Assignment! Trees are 25-35 m tall, with buttressed trunks and shallow roots, mostly evergreen, with large dark green leaves. Plants such as orchids, bromeliads, vines (lianas), ferns, mosses, and palms are present in tropical forests. Fauna include numerous birds, bats, small mammals, and insects. Further subdivisions of this group are determined by comparison, seasonal distribution of rainfall: evergreen rainforest : no dry season. Thesis Impact Assignment! seasonal rainforest : short dry period in a very wet tropical region (the forest exhibits definite seasonal changes as trees undergo developmental changes simultaneously, but the general character of vegetation remains the same as in evergreen rainforests). semievergreen forest : longer dry season (the upper tree story consists of deciduous trees, while the lower story is essays on the culture industry, still evergreen). moist/dry deciduous forest (monsoon) : the length of the dry season increases further as rainfall decreases (all trees are deciduous).

More than one half of impact assignment decision, tropical forests have already been destroyed. Temperate forests occur in eastern North America, northeastern Asia, and western and that, central Europe. Well-defined seasons with a distinct winter characterize this forest biome. Moderate climate and a growing season of 140-200 days during 4-6 frost-free months distinguish temperate forests. From left: Wisconsin woods; a forest along California's north coast; the thesis impact assignment decision forested hills of the Adirondacks, New York.

Temperature varies from writing essays -30° C to 30° C. Impact! Precipitation (75-150 cm) is distributed evenly throughout the year. Soil is with, fertile, enriched with decaying litter. Canopy is moderately dense and allows light to penetrate, resulting in well-developed and richly diversified understory vegetation and stratification of animals. Flora is characterized by 3-4 tree species per square kilometer. Impact Assignment Model! Trees are distinguished by broad leaves that are lost annually and include such species as oak, hickory, beech, hemlock, maple, basswood, cottonwood, elm, willow, and spring-flowering herbs. Fauna is represented by squirrels, rabbits, skunks, birds, deer, mountain lion, bobcat, timber wolf, fox, and descriptive po exams 2011, black bear. Further subdivisions of this group are determined by seasonal distribution of rainfall: moist conifer and evergreen broad-leaved forests : wet winters and dry summers (rainfall is concentrated in the winter months and winters are relatively mild). dry conifer forests : dominate higher elevation zones; low precipitation. mediterranean forests : precipitation is concentrated in winter, less than 100 cm per thesis model year. temperate coniferous : mild winters, high annual precipitation (greater than 200 cm). Culture Industry! temperate broad-leaved rainforests : mild, frost-free winters, high precipitation (more than 150 cm) evenly distributed throughout the year.

Only scattered remnants of impact model decision, original temperate forests remain. From left: taiga in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada; forest west of Stockholm, Sweden. Temperatures are very low. Precipitation is primarily in the form of famous essayists, snow, 40-100 cm annually. Thesis! Soil is thin, nutrient-poor, and acidic. Canopy permits low light penetration, and as a result, understory is limited. Flora consist mostly of famous, cold-tolerant evergreen conifers with needle-like leaves, such as pine, fir, and spruce. Fauna include woodpeckers, hawks, moose, bear, weasel, lynx, fox, wolf, deer, hares, chipmunks, shrews, and bats. Current extensive logging in boreal forests may soon cause their disappearance. PPE 476 Thinking with Models (Funcke) The primary focus of the thesis assignment course is on understanding, designing, and analyzing simulation models.

Students will come away from the course prepared to apply these models in a wide variety of interesting contexts. This course focuses on (1) modern simulation-based metaheuristics and on (2) agent-based simulation models in the social sciences, especially in economic, in commercial and in strategic (game-theoretic) contexts. On the metaheuristic side, we focus on evolutionary computation, including genetic algorithms, as applied to constrained optimization problems, which are prevalent in business practice. Regarding (2), agent-based models are a relatively recent form of computer simulation that seek to explain and predict complex social phenomena “from the essay meaning bottom up”, through interactions of comparatively simple agents. The course reviews experimental and theoretical results, and exposes the impact assignment model students to modern development environments for, as well as successful applications of, this form of simulation. A modest amount of programming will be expected of students. All required programming knowledge will, however, be covered, and covered gently, in the course. Each class will review some positive theoretical framework(s), such as the foundations of the rational choice theory, approaches to with writing essays, the aggregation of preferences, strategic behavior, voting methods, accounts of cooperation, collective action, public goods, and institutions.

The last part of each class will then critically apply theoretical knowledge to relevant contemporary policy issues, including current debates on governmental decision-making processes in the US and EU, lobbying in democracies, international security, greenhouse gas reduction, etc. Assignment? Note: part of the program contains a theoretical (formal) component. 475 Trust and english essayists, Deception (Hart) Social interactions such as coalition formation, negotiation and bargaining, as well as day-to-day interactions between individuals, all involve the ability to mask, and thesis impact assignment model decision, uncover, non-cooperative intentions: Social norms, business etiquette, and common courtesy often compel people to mask selfish intentions. The seminar will describe theories and research findings regarding trustworthiness and its counterpart, deception. We will discuss the nature of trust and distrust; examine signals that may convey cooperative and deceptive intentions and people's ability to detect such signals; and explore the consequences of trust, distrust and deception in different contexts. 475 Modeling of Social Phenomena (Funcke) During the 20th century social science, and in particular economics, went through a process of descriptive for bank 2011, increased formalization. The period produced a library of models of social phenomena, many competing ones.

In this course we will briefly browse the library, with the intention to decision, explore classical theoretical perspectives of what is a better model and ponder how increased normalization affects the social sciences. In the second part of the descriptive for bank course we will engage in simple mathematical modeling of social phenomena. As a group we will iteratively criticize and refine a model, study its implications and sketch strategies for testing it. 475 (PHIL 359) Social Norms (Bicchieri) This is an undergraduate research seminar covering interdisciplinary research in psychology, philosophy, sociology and behavioral economics related to social norms.

Social norms are informal institutions that regulate social life. We will devote particular attention to impact assignment model, the following questions: What is a good, operational definition of social norms? Is there a difference between social and moral norms? How can we measure whether a norm exists, and the conditions under which individuals are likely to comply with it? Are behavioral experiments a good tool to answer question 3? How do norms emerge? How are norms abandoned? What is the role of trendsetters in norm dynamics? 475 (PSYC 478) Obedience (Royzman) Though almost half a century old, Milgram’s 1961-1962 studies of “destructive obedience” continue to puzzle, fascinate, and alarm.

The main reason for papers for bank po exams 2011, their continued grip on thesis assignment, the field’s attention (other than the boldness of the idea and elegance of execution) may be simply that they leave us with a portrait of human character that is and oranges radically different from the impact one that we personally wish to endorse or that the wider culture teaches us to accept. This objective will be met primarily through class discussions and some additional readings. Summer Session 1: TR: 9 AM - 12:50 PM. The course studies the fundamental principles of decision-making and applies them to a variety of social activities. The decision-making is analyzed in terms of its uncertainty, rationality, effectiveness, and normative connotations. After the essays on the notion of rationality is introduced, rational decisions are scrutinized as individual choices that may or may not affect other individuals and their choices. In some situations the choices are predictable with high probability, in others with high uncertainty. The nature of situations influences the mode of rationality applied.

In the thesis decision game theoretical situations, for instance, the efefctive choice must reach an equilibrium, i.e. Colleges Don Require? a mutual solution acception for all rational participants. Thesis Impact Assignment Model Decision? The course reevises the theory and provides applicaitons to cases of cooperation, defection, resoluteness, etc. as well as complex cases. Our societyindeed, your everyday lifeis fundamentally shaped by risk. At least that’s what many prominent social theorists think and, after this course, I bet you’ll think that, too. Humanity has been attempting to predict and control the future since ancient times, but thinking about decisions in colleges don require essays, terms of risk is thesis assignment decision a relatively new way of seeing the world. For much of human history, people looked to gods for signs about the future and saw disasters as divine retribution for the transgressions of the past. But as the help scientific thought of the Enlightenment eroded deterministic thinking, the natural and social world came to be seen as uncertain and thesis assignment, random, but with patterns that could mathematically be developed into probabilities. Such statistical thinking about costs and benefits came to shape everything from gambling to public health and birthed whole fields and industries from actuarial science to personalized genomics. In each class we will study a single keyword related to essay, our core conceptsrisk, disaster, and predictionand in thesis impact assignment, each investigation we will analyze the for bank po exams 2011 keyword’s meaning, its history, and how it functions in the social world. Bioethics is an assignment model decision important and revealing area of study for at least two reasons. First, the questions raised within bioethics speak to universal human concerns. Essays Industry? We are all touched in some way or other by the practical and moral challenges raised by illness, disability, conception, birth, and death. But, second, although the issues raised within bioethics are intensely personal and practical, they also reflect philosophical concerns taken up within ethical theory, such as questions about moral status, autonomy, truth-telling and justice. A central theme running throughout this course is the relationship between ethical theory, on the one hand, and the actual practices and experiences of facing choices about health and mortality, on the other.

We will discuss a number of particular bioethical challenges faced by ordinary people, including abortion, treatment for severely disabled newborns, reproductive technology, confidentiality, informed consent, advance directives, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and distributive justice within the health care system. Assignment Decision? As we explore these issues, we will not shy away from the more abstract philosophical questions they raise, just as we will consider how actual practical challenges serve as crucial test cases for ethical theories. Students will be responsible for producing a series of writing assignments, completing a number of essays on the industry, worksheets and exams, and actively contributing to class discussion. PPE 073 (PHIL 073) Being Human (Gibbons) This course examines some of the central theoretical and applied questions of ethics. For example, what is the good life? By what measure or principles do we evaluate the rightness and wrongness of actions? How does ethical reasoning help us understand and address real world problems such as world hunger, social injustice, sex and thesis assignment model decision, race discrimination, allocation of scarce resources and the like. The course can be organized around an colleges essays applied topic or practical issue such as global ethics, just war, biomedical ethics or environmental ethics.

Essay: Icons as Fact, Fiction and Metaphor. For the Lens blog, Philip Gefter, formerly a picture editor at The Times who writes regularly about photography, has adapted an essay from his new book, “Photography After Frank,” published by the Aperture Foundation. Truth-telling is the promise of thesis impact a photograph — as if fact itself resides in the optical precision with which photography reflects the way we see the world. Essay. A photograph comes as close as we get to witnessing an authentic moment with our own eyes while not actually being there. Think of all the thesis impact decision, famous pictures that serve as both documentation and papers for bank po exams, verification of thesis assignment model decision historic events: Mathew Brady’s photographs of the Civil War; Lewis Hine’s chronicle of industrial growth in descriptive papers po exams, America; the birth of the civil rights movement documented in thesis impact decision, a picture of with writing essays Rosa Parks on a segregated city bus in Montgomery, Ala. Aren’t they proof of the facts in assignment decision, real time, moments in history brought to essays, the present? Of course, just because a photograph reflects the thesis impact, world with perceptual accuracy doesn’t mean it is proof of what spontaneously transpires. A photographic image might look like actual reality, but gradations of truth are measured in the circumstances that led up to the moment the picture was taken. In John Szarkowski’s seminal book, “The Photographer’s Eye,” Robert Capa is referred to as “the great war photographer.” Capa’s most famous picture, “Death of a Loyalist Militiaman, Cerro Muriano, Cordoba Front, Spain, September 5, 1936,” commonly known as “The Falling Soldier,” was taken in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. Though long considered a defining war picture, its veracity has also inspired decades of debate among scholars, curators and critics.

While the picture’s iconic stature rests on the precise moment captured when the Spanish soldier was shot, the possibility that it was staged undermines the historic proof it has come to signify. New evidence reported by the Guardian has reignited the debate. Jose Manuel Susperregui, who teaches at the University of the Basque Country, recently published a book that includes research challenging the stated location of “The Falling Soldier.” Several previously unseen Capa pictures in writing essays, the archives of the thesis assignment model, international Center of essay meaning Photography, taken in the same sequence as “The Falling Soldier,” show a broader view of the landscape behind him. Mr. Susperregui uses these additional images to make a convincing case that they were taken in the Espejo countryside, some 25 miles from Cerro Muriano. This information, along with the many stories about Capa staging the picture, add to the intrigue, now rekindled in the Spanish press on the occasion of the International Center of Photography‘s traveling exhibition, “This Is War! Robert Capa at Work,” which just opened at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. “Everyone engaged with this photograph is trying to find out the truth,” Willis Hartshorn, the director of the center, said in a phone conversation. Impact. “The new information about the landscape is apples and oranges essay compelling.” Nothing is conclusive yet, Mr.

Hartshorn added “We’re all trying to build the research together,” he said. The impulse to thesis assignment model decision, define, perfect, or heighten reality is manifest in a roster of iconic photographs that have come to reside in the world as “truth.” Mathew Brady, for instance, rarely set foot on a battlefield. He couldn’t bear the english, sight of dead bodies. In fact, most pictures of the battlefield attributed to Brady’s studio were taken by his employees Alexander Gardner and Timothy O’Sullivan — both of impact assignment model decision whom were known to have moved bodies around for the purposes of composition and posterity. In “Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter, Gettysburg, 1863,” by essays, Gardner, the body of a dead soldier lies in impact decision, perfect repose. His head is tilted in the direction of the camera, his hand on his belly, his rifle propped up vertically against the rocks. There would be no question that this was a scene the photographer happened upon, if it weren’t for another picture by Gardner of the same soldier, this time his face turned from the with writing, camera and his rifle lying on the ground. In the Library of Congress catalog, the photograph “Dead Soldiers at Antietam, 1862,” is listed twice, under the names of both Brady and Gardner. Thesis Impact Assignment. In the image, approximately two dozen dead soldiers lie in a very neat row across the field.

Could they possibly have fallen in such tidy succession? Knowing what we do about Gardner’s picture of the lone rebel soldier, the and oranges comparison essay, possibility lingers that he moved some of these bodies to create a better composition. Or it could be that other soldiers had lined the bodies up before digging a mass grave for thesis assignment model decision, burial. Whatever circumstances led to this picture, it is at least verifiable that the Battle of help writing Antietam took place on this field. We know that many, many soldiers were killed. Evidence of the battle remains — the soldiers that died on that date, the thesis impact assignment model, battlefield on which they fought, the clothes they wore, and so on. Just how much of the subject matter does the photographer have to change before fact becomes fiction, or a photograph becomes metaphor? Lewis Hine’s 1920 photograph of a powerhouse mechanic symbolizes the work ethic that built America.

The simplicity of the photograph long ago turned it into a powerful icon, all the culture industry, more poignant because of its “authenticity.” But in impact assignment model decision, fact, Mr. Hine — who cared about human labor in an increasingly mechanized world — posed this man in order to make the portrait. (In the first shot, the culture, worker’s fly was open.) Does that information make the picture any less valid? Isn’t it a sad fact that the flaws in daily life should prevent reality from thesis impact assignment being the best version of how things really are? In our attempt to perfect reality, we aim for higher standards. A man with his zipper down is famous essayists undignified, and so the famous icon, posed as he is, presents an idealized version of the American worker — his dignity customized, but forever intact. Still, the mechanic did work in that powerhouse and thesis impact, his gesture was true enough to his labor.

The reality of what the image depicts is indisputable. Whether Hine maintained a fidelity to what transpired in real time may or may not be relevant to its symbolic import. Despite its overexposure on posters and postcards, “Le Baiser de l’Hotel de Ville, 1950,” (“Kiss at the Hotel de Ville”) by Robert Doisneau, has long served as an essays example of photography capturing the spontaneity of life. Assignment Decision. How lovely the couple is, how elegant their gesture and their clothing, how delightful this perspective from a cafe in in arabic, Paris! What a breezy testament to the pleasure of romance! But despite the thesis assignment decision, story this picture seems to with writing essays, tell — one of a photographer who just happened to look up from thesis model his Pernod, say, as the enchanted lovers walked by — there was no serendipity whatsoever in essays on the culture, the moment.

Mr. Doisneau had seen the man and woman days earlier, near the school at thesis assignment, which they were studying acting. He was on assignment for Life magazine, for a story on romance in Paris, and hired the couple as models for the shot. This information was not brought to light until the early 1990s, when lawsuits demanding compensation were filed by english, several people who claimed to be the models in the famous picture. Does the impact assignment, lack of authenticity diminish the photograph? It did for me, turning its promise of and oranges comparison essay romance into a beautifully crafted lie.

Ruth Orkin was in thesis, Florence in papers for bank 2011, the early 1950s when she met Jinx Allen, whom she asked to be the subject of assignment a picture Ms. Orkin wanted to submit to The Herald Tribune. “American Girl in Italy, Florence, Italy, 1951” was conceived inadvertently when Ms. Orkin noticed the essays on the culture, Italian men on their Vespas ogling Ms. Thesis. Allen as she walked down the street. Ms. Orkin asked her to walk down the street again, to be sure she had the shot. Does a second take alter the reality of the phenomenon?

How do you parse the difference between Mr. Doisneau’s staged picture and Ms. Orkin’s re-creation? The birth of the civil rights movement is often dated to a moment in 1955 when Rosa Parks, a black woman, refused to essays on the, give up her seat on a crowded city bus to a white man. Many people assume that the famous picture of Mrs. Thesis Model Decision. Parks sitting on po exams 2011, a bus is a record of that historic moment. But the assignment decision, picture was taken Dec. 21, 1956, a year after she refused to give up her seat, and a month after the that essays, United States Supreme Court ruled Montgomery’s segregated bus system illegal. Before she died in 2005, Mrs. Parks told Douglas Brinkley, her biographer, that she posed for the picture.

A reporter and two photographers from Look magazine had seated her on the bus in front of a white man. Similar photo opportunities were arranged on the same day for other civil rights leaders, including the impact model decision, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. With. Here is a staged document that has become a historic reference point, and a revealing parable about the relationship of history to myth. As a witness to events, the photojournalist sets out to chronicle what happens in the world as it actually occurs. A cardinal rule of the profession is that the presence of the camera must not alter the situation being photographed. The viewer’s expectation about a picture’s veracity is largely determined by the context in which the image appears.

A picture published in thesis assignment model, a newspaper is believed to be fact; an advertising image is understood to be fiction. If a newspaper image turns out to have been set up, then questions are raised about trust and essay meaning, authenticity. Still, somewhere between fact and fiction — or perhaps hovering slightly above either one — is the province of metaphor, where the truth is approximated in renderings of a more poetic or symbolic nature. Comments are no longer being accepted. We need to distinguish between the general statement and the particular statement in impact model decision, the strictly linguistic and philosophical sense.

If the help with writing, Paris picture were words, it would say, “people in Paris kiss”. But the photo implies that THESE people in Paris kiss. These people do not. Impact Assignment. These two act at essay, kissing. Clearly, photos are NOT as good as words at conveying truth as it is usually impossible to tell if a photo is thesis impact model decision a general statement (staged) or a particular moment (a truly captured moment in time). But photos can be visual art and that speaks to us in primordial ways and can be motivational. I think the lesson is that photos can lie and with writing essays, frequently do. Excellent piece.

I’ve been exploring the thesis impact model, influence of imagery on writers and writing on my blog “In This Light” and have been particularly interested in how Appalachia is shown and perceived. The last paragraph in this piece about the difference between the photograph as photojournalism and the photograph as metaphor is key. ” a camera is filter through which the reality of an existential moment ( the world plus the camera plus all the essays, people)pours onto the film which preserved the visual aspects of that moment as photographed from model where you are, physically as well as in terms of awareness and depth. writing about a visual medium tends to make the simple complex. If you want to make photographs all you do is point the camera at whatever you wish ; click the shutter whenever.

if you want to judge a good photograph ,ask yourself; is life like that? the answer must be yes and no,but mostly yes” The man in the photo of with writing Rosa Parks is Nick Chris, a newspaper reporter. Chris, now deceased, concluded his career at the Houston Chronicle. I worked on staff with Nick at the HouChron.

Steve Ueckert, recently retired from the Houston Chronicle. The Rosa Parks example seems fairly obvious. I doubt a photographer, had he even been there ready to take the assignment, shot, would have had any inkling what a historic moment it would turn out to be. The closing line is much to the point: “Still, somewhere between fact and fiction — or perhaps hovering slightly above either one — is the help writing essays, province of metaphor, where the truth is approximated in renderings of a more poetic or symbolic nature.” But the point is that it is the metaphoric truth that maybe much more important than the otherwise mundane “facticity” of the image. Put differently, rarely are photojournalistic efforts important primarily because of the “fact” of what they show; their informational value per se is minor. What makes photojournalism important is that it shows us “how to see” the world in model decision, a particular way. In short, it is fundamentally a “public art” and its power and importance is a function of that artistry. For a full consideration of the manifestations of such artistry I would suggest (and this is self-promotion), the blog http://www.nocaptionneeded.com. Another classic is the Soviet Army photo of a solder raising the Red Flag over essay meaning, the Berlin Reichstag in impact model decision, 1945 , supposedly during a heated battle with bullets whizzing by him.

The first release shows his extended arm with 2 wrist watches attached. No doubt he managed to do some shopping on Friedrichstrasse before storming the building. The photo also shows lots of civilians at ground level apparently just walking about as if they really were shopping. Needless to say, the second version shows the watches gone as well as the shoppers. More of a war scene. On the one hand recreating an event so the photographer may capture it is essays on the culture completely un-ethical, posing a person for decision, a portrait is not.

A portrait, even an in arabic environmental portrait, may be posed and often is. The Hine portrait of the worker was a posed photo from the beginning why would the second photo with the zipper up be any less authentic a portrait? I say it is impact decision incumbent upon the portrait photographer to correct an error such as an unzipped fly when photographing a portrait. If, however, an unzipped fly is in essay meaning in arabic, some way relevant to the subject than leaving it down serves a purpose. Please distinguish between portraiture and thesis impact assignment model, photojournalism. Staging a shot, a la Doisneau, is un-ethical and should be labeled an colleges illustration, staging a portrait is a portrait. Finally, are the critics suggesting that Capa had a person shot so he could capture it on film? or that they used make-up to suggest he photographed somebody being shot? I have a hard time imaging even the most cynical, fame hungry photographer arranging to have somebody killed for their benefit.

yeah, if the soldiers in thesis assignment model decision, brady’s photos were not actually dead. what’s the point of news photos if they don’t carry the news in fact? For a fascinating discussion about how meaning in photography can be denoted or connoted, I suggest reading Roland Barthes’ compelling essay “The Photographic Message.” On the meaning in arabic, civil war photos: First, this question is assignment model necessarily a bit graphic. I’ve always had problems with the and oranges, two gettysburg photographs from Devil’s Den. My understanding is that Gardner took these photos on July 6. Thesis Model Decision. The fighting around Devil’s Den occurred primarily on and oranges, July 2. The initial question is why the soldier’s body doesn’t exhibit signs of bloating as seen in other photos such as the field where Reynolds fell — although fighiting in that area occurred on July 1. Furthermore, rigor mortis sets in within hours after death and lasts for thesis impact assignment model, up to colleges don require essays, 72 hours, after which the bodies decomposition takes over thesis impact model decision, and muscles loosen.

Although the soldier definitely looks deceased, why isn’t he bloated after three days in July heat and how did they turn his head for the shot in the rocks? As for essays industry, the Antietam photo, my understanding is that these men had been lined up for burial. Photographs don’t lie, but photographers (and editors and thesis impact model decision, caption writers) do. This bit of wisdom has been around for at least a century — do we need to keep being reminded of it? BTW – contrary to Gefter’s suggestion, there are several photos by Orkin of Jinx Allen in Florence — Orkin and Allen did the series to convey the experience of that essays traveling as a single woman:

When seen together, there’s little doubt as to thesis impact decision, the amount of staging in the iconic ‘ogling corner’ photograph. There’s no difference, on this level, between Orkin’s and Doisneau’s. Perhaps a mention of–or even better, a link to–Errol Morris’s superb 2007 essay in the NYT on precisely this topic would be helpful. The essay was about Roger Fenton’s “Valley of the papers 2011, Shadow of Death.” Although this topic is especially important in considering documentary photographs — since people make decisions and form attitudes based on them, sometimes without being aware of it — I think it has wider application. In general, how much of the value we place on a photographic image is based on thesis decision, what’s actually in on the culture industry, the photograph, and how much of it is thesis impact assignment decision based on what we’re told about the photograph? For example: given that it’s nearly indistinguishable from the and oranges comparison essay, output of thousands of other photo students, would anyone care much about Francesca Woodman’s work if it didn’t have such a poignant backstory? I belived the first paper to thesis impact assignment, report the new information about the essay meaning in arabic, Capa photo was El Periodico, I think published in Barcelona. Impact Assignment Decision. Just to set the record straight as to where the colleges don require, new research surfaced first.

I could be corrected if anyone saw it somewhere else first. But I know El Periodico published before Guardian or Independent or AP. – Robert Stevens. Staged photographs are illustration, rather than photo-journalism. Making an iconic photographic illustration to represent an historic event or universal human experience is not unethical — and, as Mr Gefter says, can be of considerable value. If the photographer lies, and says that it was not staged, then we have an assignment ethics problem. An extension of this might be painters who work from photographs in secret, but lie, and meaning in arabic, say they only work from life, or plein-air. For me, the kind and degree of manipulation that will rob a photograph of its value depends on the kind and degree of value we assign to it. Categorizing all the reasons a photo might be of value would take a book, but I’ll mention just three: We admire some pictures because they are icons of a fact or force of history. Others strike us because they evocatively capture an aspect of the human condition. And yet others hit home because they point out to us something beautiful; it’s heartening to be reminded that the world can be beautiful. Almost all of the thesis, pictures you discuss, if not all of them, fall to some extent into colleges that don require essays, all three categories.

But, as exemplars of the first category, I would point particularly to impact model, the photos of the very-recently-dead soldier of the Spanish Civil War (Capra), the less-recently-dead soldiers of the American Civil War (Brady/Gardner/O’Sullivan), and the still-very-much-alive soldier of the meaning, American Civil Rights Movement (Look magazine). The Parisian kissers (Doisneau) and Florentine oglers (Orkin) seem to thesis impact model, me to colleges don require essays, be in the second category. The picture of the powerhouse mechanic (Hine) is the only one I would cite as a model of the third category. Paradoxically, I guess, as long as he or she isn’t trying to defraud us by being unfaithful in some non-incidental way to history, I’m willing to cut the impact model, photographer quite a bit of slack for colleges, pictures in the first category. These particular pictures here are not frauds: soldiers did and still do die in thesis impact assignment decision, civil wars, and Rosa Parks did start a revolution by sitting in the front of a bus while a white man sat behind her.

The manipulations that attended the creation of these pictures are invisible, and they?re of famous english essayists utterly superficial elements. I’m much more averse to manipulation in the case of pictures in impact assignment decision, the second or third category. The affirming power of such pictures — unlike those in the first category — hangs on the unstated premise, which is also a promise, that this is life . Break that promise, as it seems to me Doisneau did, and you lose me. Apples And Oranges Comparison. Like a movie, his picture is of what life could be , but it doesn’t depict what life is — especially since the charm of such a kiss springs from the spontaneity and obliviousness of two lovers surrounded by thesis impact assignment, the passing multitude. The Hine doesn’t suffer from the kind of comparison fundamental defect that invalidates the Doisneau. An unzipped fly is not incidental (which is why Hine was right to retake the decision, picture), but a zipped-up one is. That leaves Orkin’s picture. You ask how we parse the difference between the fact that it was re-created while Doisneau’s was staged. It’s the right question, I think, because I do see the two pictures differently. That’s because the Orkin delivers on the promise that this is english essayists life , as we know from the fact that in all non-incidental respects the scene came together entirely spontaneously when Orkin took her first picture.

Those photos are historical documents, even if they were staged. It doesn’t matter, actually. These photos represent a certain way of life, of thinking, a set of believes that the people that composed them held dear to them. The Kiss, for instance, represents the joie de vivre, the spontaneity of young love even if the people in the picture were models. Would anyone think less of a master paint just because the people on it posed for the ocassion? Certainly not. Or see at the photo of the Militiamen falling. What it does matter if Cappa staged it? The picture still conveys the feeling of helplessness of the Spanish Republic, of the People fighting for impact model, and dying for an ideal of Freedom.

Art has a truth in itself. Thus why we still feel deep emotions when looking at help with essays, a Sixteenth Century painting, or at an Assyrian relief (see the Wounded Lioness… it is so poignant, that each time I see it I can’t stop the tears coming up!). There are no lies in a work of art, because it is the observer who gives them value, meaning, and content. Of course, they can have a propaganda intention, or better said: most of them has a propaganda intention behind them -like the thesis impact, famous Napoleon Crossing the Alps-. Though, as that propaganda is obvious, and to be workable needs to reach the inner soul of apples and oranges comparison their pretended market, the lie is no more: there is a truth in them. We need to assignment, be just more thorough to decypher the hidden truth. And that where lies most of the fun, of the beauty, of the work of art; in the glimpse of a past, in the process of discovery of those subtexts that are there, waiting for us, like long lost friends. ‘But in fact, Mr.

Hine — who cared about human labor in an increasingly mechanized world — posed this man in order to make the portrait. English. (In the thesis impact model decision, first shot, the worker’s fly was open.) Does that information make the picture any less valid? Isn’t it a sad fact that the flaws in daily life should prevent reality from famous essayists being the best version of how things really are?” Does anybody in their right mind look at model decision, the Hines photo and actually think that Mr. Hine just happened upon that scene? Setting up straw men in order to knock them down is a cheap rhetorical trick. By the way has the New York Times ever heard back from Edgar Martins?

[The Times continues to await a statement from Mr. Essays On The Culture Industry. Martins. — Lens] If you have to give further information [a “back story”] about a photograph; it is a failure. Model Decision. Being posed has nothing to descriptive papers, do with its value as art, but it has everything to do with its value as a historical record. I don’t have to know anything further about “The Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima” not the camera make, type, the film, the photograper or the situation. The photo stands on its own merits – it’s a great photograph, but it is not a “historical record. It is amazing how the thesis impact model, picture “American Girl” still creates the debate: was it posed.? It decidedly was not, and I am still alive and ready to describe that day, that moment in famous english, August l951 when Ruth Orkin and impact, I were in Florence, and the photograph was taken. It was not staged, nor was it posed. Period. Famous English Essayists. Ruth and I were literally fooling around, thinking of thesis impact model ways to show what it was like as a single American woman, traveling in Europe at that period.

We had met the with essays, night before, and thought it would be a caper. I was not, and am not a professional model. We were walking toward the Piazza della Republica at l0:30 in the monring. Ruth ahead of me. She turned around to thesis impact assignment, see the l5 men looking at me. Don Require Essays. Delighted, she asked that I stop, turn around, go back a few paces, and walk forward again.

That was literally it. And I am still here to tell the story. Two shots, in two minutes, that captured the spirit of Florence on that August mornig. Jinx Allen (Ninalee Allen Craig) Honesty is an integral part of documentary photography. When the assignment, photographer deceives, he is dishonest. If Capa, for instance, staged his picture in order to deceive his audience, he was dishonest, which discredits him as a photographer. I believe it is as simple as that. We know that photojournalists often deceive.

The editors of newspapers/magazines deceive even more often. These men/women all have an agenda to apples and oranges, lie, to propagate, to impact assignment model decision, make money, to apples comparison essay, win prizes, to thesis assignment model, become famous, whatever. There was a time when photographs taken on film at culture industry, least afforded one the opportunity to thesis assignment, investigate the extend to which a photographer lied. In the age of on the culture digital photography, it has become just about impossible to determine whether the contents of a photograph has been manipulated, or the extend to which it was manipulated. I was so glad to read that Jinx Allen is thesis assignment decision still alive and was, in this case, able to debunk the debunkers. Her comment made my day! A Framework for Best Practice Environmental Impact Assessment

How to Use Motif to Enhance Your Writing. Repetition is an important principle in every artistic pursuit from music to painting to literature. It gives you another layer of meaning to work with and assignment model can add a level of symbolic value to your seemingly casual description, dialogue, or action. Today, I’d like to try a unique exercise (which I stole from a friend who teaches art) to help us practice repetition in english essayists, the form of motif. Here’s a sneak-peak of what we’re going to do: Spend the day looking for green. When you see something green, describe it in your journal (which you’ll want to thesis impact, carry around for the day so you don’t forget your green things). Example: The green grass in and oranges essay, front of the old red-brick house no one will buy. The green -yellow bananas lying on their side in the supermarket. The green pine tree which looks bright next to the skeletal oak.

Pretty fun, right? But before we begin, let’s talk for impact assignment decision, a moment about motif. Photo by Leland Francisco. Motif is when you repeat something in your narrative. Often, authors repeat description, but dialogue, action, or any other element of narrative can be repeated as well. The interesting part is that this repeated thing gains symbolic meaning as you repeat it. For example, in The Picture of Dorian Grey Oscar Wilde uses the color white as a motif. Through the frequent uses of the word “white” in reference to things of innocence, Wilde tracks Dorian’s descent from and oranges comparison innocence and assignment his subsequent longing for don require, a return to it.

As another example, when I read Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian I underlined every instance of the words pale and decision dust. When I looked back through the novel I realized he used those words several hundred times. The pale dusty color became a major part of the on the culture industry palette of the book—along with bloodred, of course. In other words… Motif is the model palette you use to convey the world of your story and its underlying meaning. As you go through your day you might notice a few motifs. It might be certain actions in your job. Essay Meaning! It might be attitudes inherent in your personality.

It could be the colors you see as you make your morning drive—blues and greens in the summer, browns and impact assignment model greys in the winter. If you were to paint your life, what palette would you use? If you were going to convey your life on on the culture industry the page, what motifs would you use? Hopefully, today’s exercise will help you begin to notice patterns in impact, your own life, so that you can start to essays on the culture industry, arrange patterns in the lives of impact assignment decision your characters. Spend the day looking for green.

When you see something green, describe it in your journal (which you’ll want to carry around for the day so you don’t forget your green things). Example: The green grass in front of the old red-brick house no one will buy. The green -yellow bananas lying on colleges don require essays their side in the supermarket. Thesis Impact Assignment Model Decision! The green pine tree which looks bright next to the skeletal oak. When you get a decent size list (at least fifteen) post it here in the comments and we’ll compare notes. Have a green filled day! OK, here goes my “green” list: bright green grass, beginning shoots of colleges tulips and daffodils, weeping willows leafing out, my favorite coffee stand, the thesis assignment printing on my coffee card, greens of in arabic moss, evergreens everywhere in the NW, and perhaps it was a mind over matter effect, I’m wearing green! Fun exercise, Joe!

I love it, Sherrey. Did you read the post before you put on your green garb? I love the weeping willows leafing out, I always think they look so magical as they come to life! It’s funny that you wore green, was that the power of suggestion?! Love all the baby foliage in your world! (And a little green with envy about thesis impact, it, too!) I love the idea of motifs and have been identifying them in my writing and my life all day! I’m contemplating if I want to have a strong motif in my novel, I think I may. Comparison Essay! I have a few tendencies that could easily be worked into a motif. It was fun to watch for green today; here in the south it wasn’t hard to thesis assignment, find:

This morning green flecked eyes gazed back at me in the mirror, changeful as the sea, as always betraying my emotion. Tiny green ivy leaves unfurled on the window sill, greeting the morning sun. The baby ivy leaves compliment the apples comparison pale green walls of my kitchen, which I’m coming to appreciate. The Alabama coast was under tornado watch today. I witnessed the evidence of this as palm trees threw back their green heads in protest to the whipping wind. To the left and right spread fields, watered for the last week by heavy rain, now dowsed in emerald green. Behind the fields marched a row of tall pines, a dark shadow of green piercing the sky. The announcement of road names flashed by decision, my windshield in with, a florescent green blur. On the way home my eyes turned to take in the charm of a white farm house topped by a peaked green roof, it’s shingles echoing the carpet of grass beneath. This evening the sky hangs heavy, grumbling and thesis impact decision growling, and casting an ugly green light. My daughter sorts through her collection of help with writing essays beads chirruping her disapproval, “I hate green!” I chuckle as she sets aside the impact decision offending color.

Nice. Love the last two. I see that sky you’re describing. I like them all. This one caught my eye especially, “On the colleges that way home my eyes turned to take in the charm of a white farm house topped by a peaked green roof, it’s shingles echoing the carpet of grass beneath.” But you’ve got to get rid of that comma splice Beck! #128578; Haha, I know! I have to thesis impact model decision, confess that I love my comma splices. I dread the edit of my novel. It’s riddled with comma splices. (I wanted to use one right there!) I’m afraid my grammar, or lack there of, is going to essay meaning, cause my manuscript to bleed red ink! Well I suppose that;s what copy editors are for.

Hey, Joe, how ’bout a comma splice post? I know that I am very guilty of splicing! Nice list, Beck. I liked the thesis impact palm trees throwing back their heads. Been there, done that #128578; I love the idea of our lives having motifs. That is awesome sort of famous english essayists day-altering information, and entirely new to me, even better! Thanks Joe for a particularly brilliant piece today.

Already I am thinking that way, looking at the very edges of patterns in thesis impact model decision, my life — I’m not sure of the essayists entirety yet — I am just becoming aware of the motifs of my life. I’ll continue to be with it…. As to ‘greens’ I’m going to cheat and post my three. Thesis Assignment Model! (Hey, the kids have gone to their dad’s, so I’m on relax mode!) * the yellow puke green of Sam’s shirt. *the blue-green grubby-looking mesh of colleges of the mouse pad. *the cool mint of the words MP3 PLAYER against the black lid. I’m off to listen to the last one. Thesis Decision! Have a happy weekend guys #128578; I love these three, Yvette, and descriptive 2011 I love that this is altering the way you see your world. I hope it continues! The green I noticed today: It’s interesting you picked that color because before I read your post, one of thesis impact my bible readings for and oranges comparison essay, today was Mark 6:39 “Then Jesus directed all the people to thesis assignment model, sit down in groups on the green grass.” Every time I read that verse I wonder why Mark felt the need to and oranges comparison, share the thesis impact assignment model color of the help essays grass.

And then I realized that every time I read that verse I can immediately picture those 5000 people sitting on impact model that green grass…hmm. Anyway my list: The green on the green, red and white coffee cup I love to drink my coffee out of. It’s a Christmas mug with the essays on the culture word JOY written on it. My green rectangle shaped iPod shuffle attached to my blue jacket pocket while out walking my dog. My dark green bedroom walls.

Love them. The green tall grass in my front yard. Taller than normal for winter time. The bright green hideous looking car I pulled up next to on the drive into town. The green stack of thesis paper stacked neatly on the shelf in the copy room today.

They looked so cheerful next to essay in arabic, all the thesis decision other bright colors. The green pesto on essay in arabic my pesto mozzarella bruschetta sandwich I ate while having lunch with 2 good friends. The green pieces of broken glass I noticed near the assignment model curb while at the light leaving Walmart. My son’s green coat when I picked him up from school today. Saw them and smiled. Glad my son has decided that peas are no longer evil. The green cards mixed in with the yellow, blue, red cardsI held in my hand tonight during several rounds of Uno with my son.
