Ap Biology Study Reading Guide Chapter 6 Essay. Paper Images. Concept 6.1 Biologists use microscopes and the tools of biochemistry to critical styles emotional study cells 1. The study of cells has been limited by their small size, and so they were not seen and described until 1665, when Robert Hooke first looked at dead cells from an oak tree. His contemporary, Anton van Leeuwenhoek, crafted lenses and research images with the improvements in optical aids, a new world was opened. Magnification and resolving power limit what can be seen. Explain the avce ict unit 6 coursework difference.
Magnification is the research images ratio of an object’s image size to its real size. Resolution is a measure of the clarity of the image; it is the for creative writing class minimum distance two points can be separated and research still be distinguished as two points. 2. Silly Essay. The development of electron microscopes has further opened our window on images the cell and its organelles. What is considered a major disadvantage of electron microscopes? The methods used to prepare the specimen kill the cells. 3. Study the electron micrographs in your text. Describe the different types of images obtained from: scanning electron microscopy (SEM): Answers may vary, but should describe the l4-l5 retrolisthesis 3-D component of the specimen image. transmission electron microscopy (TEM) Answers may vary, but should mention that this type of microscopy profiles a thin section of a specimen, resulting in various views of the cells prepared.
4. In cell fractionation, whole cells are broken up in a blender, and paper this slurry is centrifuged several times. Critical Styles Emotional. Each time, smaller and images smaller cell parts are isolated. This will isolate different organelles and avce ict unit 6 coursework allow study of their biochemical activities. Which organelles are the smallest ones isolated in this procedure? Ribosomes Concept 6.2 Eukaryotic cells have internal membranes that compartmentalize their functions 5. Which two domains consist of prokaryotic cells? Bacteria and Archaea 6. Research Paper Images. A major difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells is the location of their DNA. Describe this difference. In a eukaryotic cell, most of the DNA is in critical thinking styles an organelle called the nucleus, which is bounded by a double membrane. In a prokaryotic cell, the paper images DNA is concentrated in a region that is avce ict unit, not membrane enclosed, called a nucleoid.
Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. -1- On the sketch of a prokaryotic cell, label each of these features and give its function or description. Research Paper Images. See page 98 in your text for essay, the labeled figure. cell wall: rigid structure outside the plasma membrane plasma membrane: membrane enclosing the cytoplasm bacterial chromosome: carries genes in the form of DNA nucleoid: region where the cell’s DNA is located (not enclosed by research a membrane) cytoplasm: interior of cell flagella: locomotion organelles of some bacteria. Why are cells so small? Explain the relationship of surface area to ideas class volume. Research. Cells are small because a high surface-to-volume ratio facilitates the exchange of materials between a cell and its environment. As a cell (or any other object) increases in size, its volume grows proportionally more than its surface area. Essay. (Area is proportional to a linear dimension cubed.) Thus, a smaller object has a greater ratio of surface area to volume. What are microvilli? How do these structures relate to the function of intestinal cells?
Microvilli are long, thin projections from the cell surface, which increase surface area without an appreciable increase in volume. A sufficiently high ratio of images surface area to avce volume is research paper, especially important in cells that exchange a lot of materials with their surroundings, such as intestinal cells. Concept 6.3 The eukaryotic cell’s genetic instructions are housed in the nucleus and carried out by the ribosomes 10. In the following figure, label the nuclear envelope, nuclear pores, and beginning steps writing pore complex. See page 103 of your text for the labeled figure. 11.
Describe the paper nuclear envelope. How many layers is it? What connects the layers? The nuclear envelope encloses the nucleus, separating its contents from the cytoplasm. The nuclear envelope is. a double membrane, meaning that there are two lipid bilayers. The nuclear lamina, a netlike array of protein filaments, connects the for creative writing class layers of the nuclear envelope. 12. What is the nuclear lamina? Nuclear matrix?
The nuclear lamina is the netlike array of protein filaments that maintains the shape of the paper nucleus by mechanically supporting the nuclear envelope. The nuclear matrix is a framework of l4-l5 degenerative retrolisthesis protein fibers extending throughout the nuclear interior. The nuclear matrix and nuclear lamina may help organize the genetic material so it functions efficiently. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. Found within the nucleus are the chromosomes. They are made of chromatin.
What are the two components of chromatin? When do the thin chromatin fibers condense to become distinct chromosomes? Chromatin is research paper, composed of proteins and DNA. Chromatin fibers condense to writing become distinct chromosomes as a cell prepares to divide. When are the nucleoli visible? What are assembled here? Nucleoli are visible in a nondividing nucleus and in cells active in protein synthesis. Within the nucleoli, proteins imported from the cytoplasm are assembled with rRNA into large and small subunits of ribosomes. What is the function of paper images ribosomes? What are their two components?
Ribosomes are the cellular components that carry out protein synthesis. Their two components are a large subunit and a small subunit. Ribosomes in any type of organism are all the same, but we distinguish between two types of ribosomes based on of tata motors essays where they are found and the destination of the protein product made. Complete this chart to demonstrate this concept. Paper Images. Location Suspended in the cytosol Product. Type of Ribosome Free ribosomes Bound ribosomes. Proteins that function within the cytosol Attached to writing class the outside of the Proteins for insertion into endoplasmic reticulum or membranes nuclear envelope. Concept 6.4 The endomembrane system regulates protein traffic and performs metabolic functions in the cell 17. List all the structures of the paper images endomembrane system. Nuclear envelope Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi apparatus Lysosomes Vesicles Vacuoles Plasma membrane 18.
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) makes up more than half the total membrane system in many eukaryotic cells. Use this sketch to explain the lumen, transport vesicles, and the difference between smooth and rough ER. See page 104 of your text for the labeled figure. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. The ER lumen is the cavity, or cisternal space.
Because the ER membrane is continuous within the nuclear envelope, the space between the two membranes of the envelope is of tata essays, continuous with the lumen of the paper images ER. Transport vesicles bud off from a region of the rough ER called transitional ER and travel to the Golgi apparatus and other destinations. Steps Essay. Smooth ER is so named because its outer surface lacks ribosomes. Rough ER is studded with ribosomes on the outer surface of the membrane and thus appears rough through the research electron microscope. Critical Thinking Emotional. 19. 1. 2. 3. 20.
List and describe three major functions of the smooth ER. Synthesis of lipids: Enzymes of the smooth ER are important in research the synthesis of lipids, including oils, phospholipids, and steroids. Detoxification of drugs and poisons: Detoxification usually involves adding hydroxyl groups to drug molecules, making them more soluble and easier to l4-l5 degenerative flush from the body. Storage of paper calcium ions: In muscle cells, the smooth ER membrane pumps calcium ions from the cytosol into the ER lumen. Ideas Writing Class. Why does alcohol abuse increase tolerance to other drugs such as barbiturates? Barbiturates, alcohol, and many other drugs induce the proliferation of smooth ER and its associated detoxification enzymes, thus increasing the rate of detoxification. This, in turn, increases the tolerance to drugs, meaning that higher doses are required to achieve a particular effect, such as sedation.
21. The rough ER is studded with ribosomes. As proteins are synthesized, they are threaded into the lumen of the rough ER. Some of these proteins have carbohydrates attached to them in research paper images the ER to form glycoproteins. What does the organizational motors ER then do with these secretory proteins? After secretory proteins are formed, the ER membrane keeps them separate from proteins that are produced by free ribosomes and that will remain in the cytosol. Secretory proteins depart from the ER wrapped in the membranes of vesicles that bud like bubbles from a specialized region called transitional ER. 22.
Besides packaging secretory proteins into transport vesicles, what is another major function of the rough ER? The rough ER grows membrane proteins and phospholipids for the cell by adding them to its own membrane. The ER membrane expands, and portions of it are transferred in research images the form of transport vesicles to other components of the silly essay endomembrane system. 23. Research Paper Images. The transport vesicles formed from the rough ER fuse with the silly bullshit essay Golgi apparatus. Use this sketch to label the cisternae of the Golgi apparatus, and its cis and trans faces. Describe what happens to a transport vesicle and its contents when it arrives at the Golgi apparatus.
See page 106 of your text for the labeled figure. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. What is a lysosome? What do they contain? What is the pH range inside a lysosome? A lysosome is research paper images, a membranous sac of hydrolytic enzymes that an animal cell uses to digest (hydrolyze) macromolecules.
The pH range inside a. lysosome is acidic. 25. One function of lysosomes is intracellular digestion of particles engulfed by phagocytosis. Describe this process of digestion. What human cells carry out phagocytosis? Amoebas and many other protists eat by engulfing smaller organisms or food particles, a process called phagocytosis. The food vacuole formed in this way then fuses with a lysosome, whose enzymes digest the food. Digestion products, including simple sugars, amino acids, and other monomers, pass into the cytosol and become nutrients for the cell. Some of the human cells that carry out phagocytosis are macrophages, a type of bullshit essay white blood cell that helps defend the research images body by engulfing and destroying bacteria and ict unit other invaders. Research. 26.
A second function of l4-l5 degenerative lysosomes is to recycle cellular components in a process called autophagy. Describe this process. During autophagy, a damaged organelle or small amount of cytosol becomes surrounded by a double membrane, and images a lysosome fuses with the outer membrane of this vesicle. The lysosomal enzymes dismantle the enclosed material, and the organic monomers are returned to the cytosol for reuse. With the help of the beginning writing essay lysosomes, the cell community renews itself. Images. A human liver cell, for example, recycles half of its macromolecules each week. 27. What happens in Tay-Sachs disease? Explain the role of the lysosomes in Tay-Sachs. In Tay-Sachs disease, a lipid-digesting enzyme is missing or inactive, and the brain becomes impaired by an accumulation of lipids in the cells.
In Tay-Sachs, the lysosomes lack a functioning hydrolytic enzyme normally present. Organizational Structure. 28. There are many types of research paper vacuoles. Briefly describe: food vacuoles: Food vacuoles are formed by phagocytosis. contractile vacuoles: Contractile vacuoles pump excess water out of the cell, thereby maintaining a suitable concentration of ions and molecules inside the cell. central vacuoles in plants: Central vacuoles in plants develop by the coalescence of smaller vacuoles, contained in mature plant cells. L4-l5 Degenerative. Solution inside the paper images central vacuole, called cell sap, is the plant cell’s main repository of inorganic ions, including potassium and ideas for creative writing chloride. The central vacuole plays a major role in the growth of plant cells, which enlarge as the vacuole absorbs water, enabling the research cell to become larger with a minimal investment in new cytoplasm. Use this figure to explain how the paper images elements of the endomembrane system function together to secrete a protein and to digest a cellular component. Label as you explain. See page 108 in your text for the labeled figure. Nuclear envelope is connected to rough ER, which is also continuous with smooth ER. Membranes and proteins produced by the ER flow in the form of transport vesicles to the Golgi apparatus. Golgi apparatus pinches off transport vesicles and other vesicles that give rise to lysosomes, other types of specialized vesicles, and vacuoles. Organizational Of Tata Motors. Lysosome is available for fusion with another vesicle for digestion. Transport vesicle carries proteins to plasma membrane for images, secretion.
Plasma membrane expands by 6 coursework fusion of vesicles; proteins are secreted from cell. Concept 6.5 Mitochondria and chloroplasts change energy from one form to another 30. What is an endosymbiont? An endosymbiont is a cell living within another cell. 31. What is the endosymbiont theory?
Summarize three lines of evidence that support the model of endosymbiosis. The endosymbiont theory states that an images early ancestor of eukaryotic cells engulfed an oxygenusing nonphotosynthetic prokaryotic cell, and over the course of evolution, the host cell and its endosymbiont merged into organizational of tata motors, a single organism, a eukaryotic cell with a mitochondrion. At least one of these cells may have taken up a photosynthetic prokaryote, becoming the ancestor of eukaryotic cells that contain chloroplasts. Three lines of evidence that support the model of endosymbiosis: 1. Rather than being bound by a single membrane, like organelles of the endomembrane system, mitochondria and typical chloroplasts have two membranes surrounding them. Images. 2. Beginning Steps. Like prokaryotes, mitochondria and chloroplasts contain ribosomes, as well as circular DNA molecules attached to their inner membranes. 3. Also consistent with their probable evolutionary origins as cells, mitochondria and chloroplasts are autonomous organelles that grow and reproduce within cells. 32. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are not considered part of the endomembrane system, although they are enclosed by paper membranes.
Sketch a mitochondrion here and silly essay label its. outer membrane, inner membrane, inner membrane space, cristae, matrix, and ribosomes. See page 110 of your text for the labeled figure. Paper. 33. Now sketch a chloroplast and label its outer membrane, inner membrane, inner membrane space, thylakoids, granum, and thinking stroma. Notice that the research mitochondrion has two membrane compartments, while the chloroplast has three compartments. See page 111 of your text for the labeled figure. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. What is the function of the mitochondria? Mitochondria are the sites of cellular respiration, the metabolic process that uses oxygen to generate ATP by extracting energy from sugars, fats, and other fuels.
What is the function of the chloroplasts? Chloroplasts are sites of essay photosynthesis. These organelles convert solar energy to chemical energy by absorbing sunlight and using it to drive synthesis of organic compounds such as sugars from carbon dioxide and water. Recall the relationship of structure to function. Why is the research paper inner membrane of the mitochondria highly folded? What role do all the individual thylakoid membranes serve? (Notice that you will have the l4-l5 degenerative retrolisthesis same answer for both questions.) As highly folded surfaces, the cristae give the inner mitochondrial membrane a large surface area, thus enhancing the productivity of cellular respiration. As in mitochondria, thylakoid membranes serve to increase the surface area and research paper images thus the avce 6 coursework function of the chloroplasts. 37. Explain the important role played by peroxisomes. Peroxisomes contain. enzymes that remove hydrogen atoms from various substrates and transfer them to oxygen, thus producing hydrogen peroxide as a by-product. SUMMARY On these diagrams of plant and animal cells, label each organelle and give a brief statement of its function.
See pages 100–101 of your text for the labeled figures and research a brief statement of each organelle’s function. Concept 6.6 The cytoskeleton is a network of fibers that organizes structures and activities in the cell 38. What is the cytoskeleton? The cytoskeleton is avce ict unit, a network of fibers extending throughout the cytoplasm. 39. What are the three roles of the cytoskeleton? 1. Research Paper. Maintenance of cell shape 2. Mechanical support 3. Cell motility (movement) both of the cell as a whole and avce ict unit 6 coursework more limited movement of parts of the cell 40. Research. There are three main types of structure fibers that make up the research cytoskeleton. Name them. Microtubules, Microfilaments, Intermediate Filaments Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. 41.
Microtubules are hollow rods made of a globular protein called tubulin. Each tubulin protein is a dimer made of two subunits. These are easily assembled and disassembled. What are four functions of microtubules? 1. Avce Ict Unit. Maintenance of cell shape 2. Cell motility 3. Chromosome movement in research images cell division 4. Ideas For Creative Writing. Organelle movement 42. Research. Animal cells have a centrosome that contains a pair of centrioles. Plant cells do not have centrioles. What is another name for centrosomes? What is believed to be the role of styles emotional centrioles?
Another name for centrosome is “microtubule-organizing center.” The centrioles function as compression-resisting girders of the cytoskeleton. 43. Describe the organization of microtubules in a centriole. Make a sketch here that shows this arrangement in research paper cross section. See page 114 of your text for silly bullshit, the labeled figure. The two centrioles are at right angles to each other, and each is made up of nine sets of three microtubules.
44. Cilia and flagella are also composed of microtubules. The arrangement of microtubules is research, said to be “9 + 2.” Make a cross-sectional sketch of a cilium here. (See Figure 6.24b in your text.) See page 115 of your text for the labeled figure. 45. Compare and contrast cilia and flagella. Cilia and flagella are both microtubule-containing extensions that project from some cells. Ideas For Creative. Cilia. and flagella share a common structure, each having a group of microtubules sheathed in an extension of the plasma membrane. Flagella and research cilia differ in their beating patterns. A flagellum has an essay undulating motion that generates force in the same direction as the flagellum’s axis, like the research tail of a fish. In contrast, cilia work more like oars, with alternating power and recovery strokes generating force in a direction perpendicular to the cilium’s axis.
46. How do motor proteins called dyneins cause movement of cilia? What is the role of ATP in organizational essays this movement? This figure might help you explain. See page 116 of your text for paper images, the labeled figure. Dyneins are responsible for the bending and movements of the organelle. A dynein molecule performs a complex cycle of movements caused by organizational structure essays changes in the shape of the protein, with ATP providing the energy for these changes. 47. Microfilaments are solid, and they are built from a double chain of actin. Study Figure 6.27 in your text, and explain three examples of movements that involve microfilaments. Research Images. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc.
1. Myosin motors in muscle cell contraction: The “walking” of myosin projections (the so-called heads) drives the parallel myosin and actin filaments past each other so that the actin filaments approach each other in the middle. This shortens the muscle cell. Muscle contraction involves shortening of many muscle cells at the same time. See also Figure 6.27a on page 117. 2. Amoeboid movement: Interaction of actin filaments with myosin causes contraction of the cell, pulling the cell’s trailing end forward. See also Figure 6.27b on page 117. 3. Cytoplasmic streaming in plant cells: A layer of cytoplasm cycles around the steps writing cell, moving over a carpet of parallel actin filaments. Myosin motors attached to organelles in the fluid cytosol may drive the streaming by interacting with the actin. See also Figure 6.27c on research images page 117. 48.
What are the motor proteins that move the microfilaments? Myosin 49. Intermediate filaments are bigger than microfilaments but smaller than microtubules. They are more permanent fixtures of cells. Give two functions of intermediate filaments. Possible answers include: 1. Maintenance of cell shape (tension-bearing elements) 2. Anchorage of nucleus and certain other organelles 3. Formation of nuclear lamina Concept 6.7. Extracellular components and connections between cells help coordinate cellular activities 50. What are three functions of the cell wall? 1. Protects the plant cell 2. Maintains its shape 3. Prevents excessive uptake of water 51.
What is the composition of the cell wall? Microfibrils made of the polysaccharide cellulose are synthesized by an enzyme called cellulose synthase and writing secreted to the extracellular space, where they become embedded in a matrix of other polysaccharides and proteins. 52. Research Images. What is the retrolisthesis relatively thin and flexible wall secreted first by a plant cell? Primary cell wall 53. What is the research middle lamella?
Where is it found? What material is it made of? The middle lamella is a thin layer of sticky polysaccharides called pectins, located between the primary walls of adjacent cells. 54. Explain the deposition of a secondary cell wall. Copyright © 2011 Pearson Education, Inc. The secondary wall, often deposited in several laminated layers, has a strong and durable matrix that affords the cell protection and support. 55. On this sketch, label the primary cell wall, secondary cell wall, middle lamella, plasma membrane, central vacuole, and plasmodesmata.
See page 119 of ict unit your text for the labeled figure. 56. Animal cells do not have cell walls, but they do have an extracellular matrix (ECM). On this figure, label the elements indicated, and research paper images give the role of each. L4-l5. See page 120 of your text for the labeled figure. 57. What are the intercellular junctions between plant cells? What can pass through them?
Plasmodesmata are the intercellular junctions between plant cells. Cytosol passes through the plasmodesmata and joins the internal chemical environments of adjacent cells. 58. Animals cells do not have plasmodesmata. This figure shows the three types of intercellular junctions seen in animal cells. Label each type and summarize its role. See page 121 of your text for the labeled figure. There is an excellent chart of research page 123 of your text that summarizes Concepts 6.3–6.5. How to Type a Research Paper (with Pictures) - wikiHow
How two named models of health behaviour have been successful at predicting health behaviour. There has, in research paper, recent years, been an bullshit increasing onus on prevention of disease, health promotion and the importance of campaigns designed to facilitate such notions (Becker and Rosenstock, 1989). For instance, since 1999, the UK has spent around £13.73 million on anti-smoking campaigns alone, which equates to roughly £0.29 per paper capita , and a recent Government white paper, Choosing Health: Making Healthier Choices Easier (DoH, 2004) set out the Blair administration’s continuing commitment to the area of l4-l5, prevention rather than treatment. The document makes it clear that, not only is health behaviour a major facet of Governmental thinking but it also features prominently in the psychology of the general public : Millions of people are trying to lose weight. Millions of busy people are trying to fit more exercise into their lives. Images! 70% of writing, England's 10 million smokers want to research paper stop smoking. Styles! Millions of research images, parents are looking for cheap and convenient ways to provide good food for their children.
That strong desire by millions of individuals in England to change to a healthier way of life is an opportunity. (DoH, 2004) In their article Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Program Retention, Becker and Rosenstock (1989) trace this resurgence in the concept of prevention to the middle of the twentieth century (Becker and Rosenstock, 1989: 285) and state that a major factor was the widespread decline in l4-l5 retrolisthesis, instances of serious infectious diseases and the realisation of the prevalence of chronic syndromes and deaths caused by accidents and research, acts of violence . All of these could, it was thought, be highly effectively prevented through suitable health promotion and the alteration of behaviour. This view, of course, is organizational of tata essays based on notions that, indeed, an individual's behaviour and attitudes towards his or her own health can be predicated and so altered. In this essay I would like to look at two of the main models of health behaviour and examine their aetiology, efficacy and influence on research paper images health and social policy in avce ict unit 6 coursework, the last twenty years. The two models I have chosen to research images look at are the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Theory of organizational structure, Planned Behaviour (TPB) which, I think, represent not only the most straightforward and consistent theoretical frameworks of images, health psychology but also feature highly in any formation of l4-l5 retrolisthesis, policy and Governmental decision making . The HBM, as Brannon and Feist (2004) detail, extends as far back as the early work of Geoffrey Hochbaum in the late 1950's . Research Paper! However, it was through the structure of tata work of Becker (1979, 1984, 1989) and Rosenstock (1984, 1989, 1990) that it was fully conceptualised and, from there, applied to not only health psychology but health practice. The HBM is centred around five basic assumptions: that for a person to take preventative action against a disease they must, feel susceptible on a personal basis to the disease itself; feel that such a disease would have severe enough affects on them; feel that preventative benefits would be worth while in reducing the risk of acquiring the disease; think that external barriers such as pain, inconvenience, social embarrassment or financial difficulties would be less than contracting the disease and, lastly, that cues to action (Pitts and Phillips, 1998: 9) such as media advertising and health promotion would provide sufficient impetus to take measures.
From these factors, it is thought, an individual's behaviour towards their own health can be predicted and so legislated for. As Brannon and Feist asserts this model equates, in research images, some sense at least, to common sense: When people perceive that they are susceptible to structure motors essays a severe illness and research images, can benefit from their ability to overcome barriers to good health, they should be guided by ideas writing class, their own self-interest and actively seek health care (Brannon and Feist, 2004: 47) It is this aspect that has made the HBM a popular theory in recent times. It has the benefit of research paper, being, firstly easy to beginning steps essay calibrate and, secondly easy to research images act upon. It is styles easy to see the attraction of research paper images, a model that espouses a relatively simple relationship between the perceptions of risk and the role of cues to action. Graham Russell (1999) calls the HBM uncomplicated and ict unit, intuitive (Russell, 1999: 114) and details that it has common applications in two major regimes of health care, where stress is placed upon:
Encouraging people to seek early professional help for signs and symptoms of illness. Improving uptake on preventative health programmes such as immunisation and screening for disease (Russell, 1999: 115) Within these notions, of course, we could cite breast cancer screening (mammography), flu immunization, dietary education and change to exercise routines as examples of the images ways in which the critical styles HBM directly reflects Government policy and people's own health behaviour. A study by paper, Fulton et al (1991), used the steps essay HBM as a basis for questionnaires and to organise multivariate analysis of interview responses (Fulton et al, 1991: 1). The study used a telephone canvassing methodology, looking at 852 women from Rhode Island USA, all above 40 in research images, order to ascertain their behavioural patterns regarding their own health and attitudes towards disease prevention. The questions asked concerned such as areas as their individual perception of susceptibility, their particular modifying factors such as ethnicity, income, marital status, the likelihood of action and their screening behaviour. It found that the likelihood of women seeking regular mammograms was increased significantly when a medical provider recommended such action. However, almost one-fifth of the women had no such provider, 13 per cent had no source of gynaecological care, one-fourth felt susceptible to breast cancer and a third thought mammograms were too uncomfortable to organizational structure undergo. (Fulton et al, 1991) Fulton et al (1991) also stress the importance of what they call modifying factors such as ethnicity and access to cues to action. There was a direct relationship, they found, between exposure to cues to action and paper images, the willingness to retrolisthesis undergo preventative screenings . This is also bourn out in such studies as Hyman, Baker, Ephraim, Moadel and research images, Phillip's 1994 study that showed that being an African American women - rather than a European American woman - was a better predicator of mammography use than any of the four elements of the health model belief. Thinking Emotional! (Brannon and images, Feist, 2004: 47).
It has also been suggested that external contingent factors such as opportunity and poverty is a better predictor of health behaviour than the HBM. One of the most effective and useful applications of the HBM is in the predictive take up of critical styles emotional, screening for sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis. Research Paper Images! A study in the US by Hergenrather and Rhodes (2003) of the MSM (men who have sex with men) community and their willingness to be vaccinated against thinking styles emotional, Hepatitis A, found that men who reported high levels of communication with their healthcare provider about their sexual orientation and risk behaviour were more likely to research images be vaccinated (Hergenrather and Rhodes, 2003:1). Policy could then be directed to specifically address such findings, targeting fiscal and communicative concerns in specific demographic and psychosocial areas. The Theory Of Planned Behaviour. The TPB is derivative of an earlier concept; the Theory of Reasoned Action and both appear in the works of Icek Ajzen.
Ajzen stresses the importance of 'perceived behavioural control' (1991: 103) in affecting people's attitudes and choices relating to avce ict unit their health. Ajzen postulates that it is research paper possible to predict an individual's behaviour through knowledge of, firstly, their attitude towards that behaviour, secondly, their 'subjective norm' and, lastly, their perceived behavioural control. All of l4-l5 retrolisthesis, these factors combine to produce an individual's intentions. Perceived behavioural control is the extent that one feels one can alter the outcome of paper images, a situation, it is based on a number of structure motors essays, influencing factors including past experience, access to pertinent knowledge and a perception of one's own ability to overcome obstacles (Brannon and Feist, 2004:50). Paper! Ajzen cites studies such as Alagna and Reddy (1984) that suggest there is particular pertinence to the area of health regarding this particular theory: When reduced to the level of specific response tendencies, perceived self-efficacy or perceived control over performance of a behaviour is found to correlate strongly with actual performance.(Ajzen, 1991: 107) In this view, it is thought that those who feel as though they can easily complete a task or overcome an obstacle are more likely to have intensions to bullshit do so. Studies such as Orbell, Blair, Sherlock and Conner (2001) and Maher and Rickwood (1991) have suggested that the TPB can be especially effective in research paper images, predicting behaviour concerning the purchase and consumption of illegal drugs by the young, for instance, or the organizational structure motors essays up-take of smoking. Knowledge of an individual's attitudes on, for instance, cannabis (Armitage et al, 1999), their perception of paper, their own level of control and the subjective norms of their peer group can all aid in thinking emotional, the prediction of their behaviour.
In Attitudes, Personality and research paper images, Behaviour, Ajzen gives us a suitably succinct summation of his theorum: With varying implications, attitudes and personality traits can be reduced to the level of ideas, a particular behaviour, and such behaviour-specific dispositions are found to correlate well with compatible action tendencies. (Ajzen, 1991: 109) He stresses the notion that behaviour is research paper a planned function of the individual and that any decision concerning health and disease prevention can be predicted with knowledge of such intentions. Of course as many commentators have pointed out (Pitt and structure of tata motors essays, Phillips, 1998, Armitage, 1999) the main difficulty with this model is that it only identifies intentions of behaviour, intentions that, may or may not result in actual behavioural outcomes. There are many reasons why an intention may not be acted upon; it may be unsuitable at research images, the time, for instance, or there maybe other contingent external factors (Pitt and l4-l5, Phillips, 1998:13). In an Australian study carried out by Kashima and images, McCamish (1992), it was found that past experience played a considerable role in forming intentions regarding condom use in thinking styles, the prevention of AIDS and HIV: The role of past behaviour, in particular, appears to research paper images be central to understanding sexual practice in general, and the use of condoms in particular. Our studies show that past behaviour stabilizes the intention to use a condom (or to practice another form of safer sex, such as nonpenetrative sex). (Kashima and McCamish, 1992: 40)
The importance of such notions of 'temporal stability' (Ajzen, 1991: 99) is also stressed by Ajzen who cites studies concerning smoking as indicators that specific response tendencies can be both a formative influence of future behaviour and bullshit, a reliable predictive tool for the health authorities. Behaviour that can predicted, it is research images thought, can lead to better targeted and so cost effective health care prevention. If we take smoking, for instance, we can see that, using the TPB, it would be beneficial to suggest that smoking behaviour can be changed and smoking stopped rather than continually stressing its detrimental affects on health. A recent NHS initiative stresses the behavioural control a smoker has over the outcomes of steps, their action and the degree to which they can expect to overcome the obstacle of giving up cigarettes. Research Images! The Giving Up Smoking campaign website and literature constantly features people who have been successful in giving up smoking rather than images of those smokers who suffer from smoking related diseases. There are testimonials and plans dedicated to help the structure smoker give up, each of which reinforce their control and target their sense of paper, autonomy over the addiction. As detailed in Hardill, Kofman and Graham's (2001) Human Geography of the UK, the Labour Government's 1998 white paper Our Healthier Nation (DoH, 1998) not only pledged more money and resources to campaigns that promoted strategies of lifestyle management (Hardill, Kofman and essay, Graham, 2001: 124) but obviously reflected such health behaviour predictors as the Health Belief Model and the Theory of paper, Planned Behaviour: The government has announced a plan to save 148,000 deaths from stroke and coronary heart disease by steps writing, 2010. Funding will go on research training more cardiac surgeons, creating a number of beginning writing, 'chest pain clinics' and 'stop smoking clinics'. (Hardill, Kofman and research paper images, Graham, 2001: 124) The inference in this statement is clear: behaviour, according to ideas class the Government at least, can be predicted and health policy adjusted accordingly. Here, the onus on 'stop smoking clinics' and chest pain clinics stress the importance of research, early detection and prevention, an obvious outcome in a faith in behavioural models as they relate to ideas for creative class the health service.
However, not every study agrees with the research paper images notion that health predictors are successful in critical styles, predicting health behaviour . Heaven (1996) cites a study in Australia that looked at the responses of 18 year olds to the threat of AIDS , it predicted, using health belief models that the more severe the threat and the more at risk the participants thought themselves in the greater the chance that they would practice safe sex. However, this was only partially true, as Heaven states: Although there were no significant differences between the sexes on measures of health motivation and susceptibility to infection, these factors did not predict males' sexual risk with casual partners. Females who saw themselves at risk of infection tended to take increased risks with casual partners. Thus, their perceptions of risk were not matched by preventive behaviour. (Heaven, 1996: 35)
Allied to research paper this is a study conducted by Conner and Flesch (2001) that suggested there was strong external reasons, such as alcohol and peer grouping that contributed more to young people ignoring contraception advice than planned behaviour and Brannon and Feist (2004) suggesting outright that Research has shown that the health belief model has only limited success in predicting health-related behaviour (Brannon and Feist, 2004: 54). The success of health behaviour predictors, then, seems to rest in their ability to be translated into public health policy. It is easy to see how relatively simple structures such as the ideas for creative writing health belief model form the basis of Government thinking on such areas as giving up smoking, screening for breast cancer and images, use of contraceptives. As many commentators have suggested (Brannon and Feist, 2004; Freeman and Levine, 1989; Pitt and Phillips, 1998) the actual picture is, perhaps, more complicated, with an-ever growing network of influencing factors constantly at play. However, given constraints such as economics and demographics, it is not surprising that health services rely so heavily on predictive models even though their success rates may be in doubt.
