You know you want to concept, write a song – lyrics with a melody and paper images some chords – but you may only have a vague idea or a feeling about what you want to writing essay, express. Salem Witch Paper! When that happens you could end up with a song that listeners can’t understand or relate to. So which comes first – lyrics, melody, or chords? My answer is: None of the concept writing essay, above. There are a lot of essay, ways to start a song and you could start with one of those, but I’m going to suggest that you start with THE TITLE. The title is going to be the concept, line that everyone remembers. Acid Essay! More important, it’s going to define the message of the song. It will be your guide, keeping your song on track and keeping listeners interested. Think of your title as the peak of a pyramid. The rest of the song is made up of the building blocks that support it.
Start your song with a title that appeals to you. Make sure it’s a phrase that rings true in your ears. Writing! Something that makes you say, “I’ve got to know more about that!” Because if YOU want to paper images, know, others will want to know. TIP: Short phrases make good titles because they grab attention and they’re easy to remember. Concept Writing! The ideal length for witch trial research paper, a title is one to five words. Listen to writing, your friends and family to of terror, see if you can pick out concept writing essay, interesting phrases. Or turn inside and listen to essay about, yourself by doing some stream-of-consciousness writing. Write or type as fast as you can, trying not to think or make judgments, then go back and look for concept essay, good phrases. Start keeping a list of these potential titles. GO AHEAD DO IT – Start your title list right now. Essay! Pick up a book or magazine, or scan for interesting short phrases. Write down at least three phrases. Concept Writing Essay! Mix and match words between phrases, substitute your own words, play around with ideas. Try to come up with at least one phrase that makes you want to write a song.
Keep looking for more phrases until you have something you like. Of Terror! Draw a big circle around that phrase. Then keep reading. ? Turn a title into a lyric. Here’s how. Now, let’s begin to turn your title into a great lyric by simply asking a few questions – the questions suggested by your title. If you use these questions as a guide when writing your lyric, you’ll be able to…
Finish every song you start Keep listeners with you Make your song say what you want. Ask the writing, questions hidden in your title. Every title suggests questions that need to be answered. Some of the questions will be ones that you want to acid essay, explore, others will be questions that listeners have. You’ll need to answer both. Let me give you a few examples… Take a classic song title like “Heartbreak Hotel.” Some of the questions this title suggests are: What is a ‘heartbreak hotel’? What happens there?
Where is essay it? Sure enough, these questions are all answered in this great Rock standard. What is a ‘heartbreak hotel’? A place to go when your baby leaves you. What happens there? Brokenhearted lovers cry. Where is it? Down at images the end of Lonely Street.
A title like Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” suggests questions like “Who was trouble?” “What kind of trouble?” and ‘How did things turn out?” If these questions aren’t answered in the song, listeners will go away disappointed. Here’s the lyric. Concept Essay! Take a look to see how these questions were answered. In a big Country hit like “You’re Gonna Miss This” recorded by Trace Adkins, listeners will be asking “What is of mobiles-essay it we’re going to miss?” and “Why will we miss it?” Check out the lyric. You might be surprised by the answer! That’s the sign of a great song. It draws the listener in with questions, then answers them in a fresh way.
Of course, you’ll also have questions you want to concept, write about. Exploring our own feelings and experiences is a big part of what drives us to misuse of mobiles-essay, write songs. So, here are a few questions you might want to answer. What does your title mean? How do you feel about concept essay, that? Why do you think that happened? What do you hope or fear will happen next?
If you’d like to of mobiles-essay, hear a lyric example, listen to “Be With You,” a song I wrote with singer-songwriter Ed Patrick. Concept Essay! The lyric answers questions suggested by the title, questions like: Why is the singer saying this? What’s happening? Who is acid essay involved? What is the singer feeling? Why is it important to concept writing, him? A simple title like this one can suggest a lot of different emotions and situations. Ed and I wrote about the feelings we wanted to express, but another songwriter could go in an entirely different direction with the same title. Acid Essay! You can choose the questions you want to writing essay, answer and the way you want to answer them. GO AHEAD DO IT – Go back and good your look at the title you circled in the previous exercise.
What questions does it suggest to you? What would you like to say about it? Make a list of questions you’d like to answer. Then add any questions you think listeners might have. Answer your questions in short phrases, eight to writing essay, ten words will convert easily into lyric lines. Write more than you think you’ll need; you won’t use all of it. Acid Essay! Remember, it’s just raw material. Writing Essay! Explore the possibilities. Don’t worry about rhyming, just say what you want to say.
That’s the best place to essay, start. ? Add images related words to bring your song to life. Just like a potter has clay and a painter has tubes of paint, the songwriter has images, action words, and fresh ideas. These are your raw materials. You’re going to create that raw material yourself by using the words, phrases, and essay images suggested by your song title. Make a list of words and images the title suggests. Let’s say your song title is “You Make Me Smile.” To create raw material based on this title, think of words and images associated with smiling.
We can start with obvious ones like “happy,” “sunny,” “bright,” and of mobiles-essay “fun.” These are words you can use in your lyric, but they’re a little bit abstract. Let’s see if we can come up with words that will actually create an upbeat feeling for listeners and really make them feel like smiling. Take the words “happy” and “fun,” for instance. What are a few things that are fun, things that make people smile? Parties, dancing, weekends, and vacations.
The sound of laughter and concept writing music. Use And Of Mobiles-essay! Favorite foods and a day at the park with friends. Writing! A trip to the beach, a night on the town. Bright lights and crowds and carnival rides. These are just rough ideas. Try not to judge whether they’re good or not at of mobiles-essay this stage. Just write down everything that comes to concept writing essay, you.
You won’t use all of it, but you never know what might end up in your song. Now, let’s try the word “sunny.” Obviously that word makes me think of sunshine, which makes me think of summer and being outdoors, which makes me think of grass, trees, and flowers. Flowers make me think of use and misuse of mobiles-essay, colors – gold, red, purple – and concept writing bees buzzing around. So now we have a whole bunch of good essay about dad, words that evoke mental images – bees, flowers, sunshine, parties, dancing, colors! They all have to concept essay, do with smiling and feeling good. And they all came from starting with one or two words, and the crossing essay then letting them suggest more. To hear how these words are used in a hit song, here’s part of the chorus lyric of “Smile” by Uncle Kracker. Essay! Notice how many words are similar to the ones we came up with. You make me dance like fool. Forget how to breathe. Just the thought of you can drive me wild.
Oh, you make me smile. Now the use and of mobiles-essay, listener is able to picture how the singer is feeling instead of concept writing essay, just having to take his word for it. This is one of the use and misuse of mobiles-essay, most important tools a songwriter has. Writing Essay! Check out “Smile” by Uncle Kracker on Spotify, read the lyrics online, or watch the video to hear even more fun images and ideas based on the crossing essay, smiling. BONUS TIP: After you have a list of related words, make a list of concept, contrasting words and images, ones that suggest the opposite. For example, I wrote a song called “California Girl.” Obviously the related words will include summer, sun, warm, waves, water, sand, feeling free – a kind of or paradise. Contrasting words will be winter, moon, cold, fire (contrasting with water), and feeling caught or trapped (the opposite of feeling free). If you’d like to hear how I turned these lists of related and acid essay contrasting words into a lyric, watch the concept essay, video of my song “California Girl” or listen and read the trial paper, lyrics here. GO AHEAD DO IT – Make a list of words, images, and phrases related to your title. Essay! Write down single words or short phrases.
Don’t think about rhyming or making sense of things at reign of terror essays this point. And try not to be critical of your ideas – just write down what comes to essay, you. Then, make a list of contrasting words, images, and salem witch trial research phrases. Write as many words as you can think of in each column. Let one idea suggest another and follow the essay, trail wherever it takes you. This is a great exercise for essay your, stretching your creativity. ? Why is concept song structure such a big deal?
Now is a good time to get familiar with one very important aspect of songwriting: Song Structure. Trial Paper! An easy-to-follow structure acts like a path leading your listener through your song from beginning to end. The most common contemporary hit song structure looks something like this: VERSE / CHORUS / VERSE / CHORUS / BRIDGE / CHORUS . Listeners like this song form because it provides enough repetition to feel familiar and enough variety to keep them interested. It also gives you, the songwriter, the chance to add emotional dynamics to your song. Many of essay, today’s hit songs feature a conversational, low-key verse followed by a big, powerhouse chorus with plenty of emotional punch. Once you get familiar with this basic song structure, there are plenty of add-ons and essay about variations to play with. Some songs have a pre-chorus or extra post-chorus hook. But try using this one to get started. It’s been the concept writing, foundation of acid essay, many huge hits and many more to come.
Here are some useful definitions for understanding song structure: – Verse: The verses in a song all have the same melody but different lyrics. The verse lyrics give us information about the concept, situation, emotions, or people in the song. – Chorus: We may hear the chorus of a song three, four or more times. Essay About Your Dad! The lyric and writing essay melody remain the same each time it recurs. The chorus lyric sums up the heart of the song. The title of the song almost always appears in the chorus section and may be repeated two or more times. – Bridge: The bridge has a different melody, lyrics, and chord progression from the verse or chorus. Witch Research Paper! It provides a break from the repetition of verse and chorus.
The lyric often provides an insight or revealing moment. GO AHEAD DO IT. Use the song form VERSE / CHORUS / VERSE / CHORUS / BRIDGE / CHORUS . Go back to the list of questions you made earlier and choose a question to answer in concept essay, each section. Essay About! The chorus will be repeated several times so pick the most important question to answer there. Often, that question is “What does this feel like?” Be sure to use your title in your chorus! Fill in the lines around your title using some of the images from your list. Concept Essay! Make sure your listeners understand your song by having the use and, singer come right out and writing say what he or she really feels at about least once in the chorus. When you have a rough idea of your chorus lyric, move on to a verse. Verse lyrics tend to be more conversational, so keep it simple and just answer the question you picked in an open, honest way. ? Look for the melody that lives in writing, your lyrics.
Every time you open your mouth to speak, you start singing! Don’t believe me? Just try speaking without using any changes in pitch, without speaking faster or slower, louder or softer. You can’t do it! You end up sounding like a robot. Although we usually think of singing as something quite different from talking, we actually use a lot of melody when we talk. When we talk we use pitch, volume, phrasing, and rhythm – all the elements of a song melody.
The only difference is in a song these elements are exaggerated and there’s more repetition. So if you have a few lyric lines, all you need to salem research paper, do is speak them to get a raw melody started. It’s the melody part of speech that communicates emotion. In fact, just by changing the melody you can give the same words an entirely different emotional meaning. Try this: say the writing essay, phrase “Oh, no?” as if you are asking a simple question. Now, say the witch trial paper, same phrase — “Oh no!” — as if you are anxious and frightened. Notice the difference in the melody?
In the question, the melody goes up at the end. In the frightened version, the essay, pitch starts higher and then the melody moves downward. Exaggerate the emotion in the second phrase and you’ll really hear it. Now try saying “Oh no” with a sarcastic, disbelieving, ‘you’ve got to be kidding’ tone. It’s an entirely different melody from the other two. You can use this melodic element of speech to give your songs added emotional impact.
If you’ve got a lyric that asks a question, try a rising motion on the end of the melody , just as if you were really asking a question. Reign Of Terror Essays! Or, if your lyric questions are the kind that don’t really want an answer, try a descending melody on the end of the phrase. Writing Essay! You’ll make the meaning clear and sound natural and believable to your listeners. GO AHEAD DO IT – To achieve the conversational tone of many of today’s verses, try speaking your verse lyric in acid essay, a casual, conversational style, then exaggerate it a little to concept essay, begin creating your verse melody. Keep the pauses that occur naturally and exaggerate the little ups and downs in your speaking voice. You’ll want to make changes later but, for now, this will give you a good place to good about your, start. Remember, this is essay your raw material, not the finished melody. Choruses often have more energy and the crossing urgency, conveying more of the song’s emotional heart.
As we saw with the “Oh, no!” phrase, the more emotion there is, the higher the concept writing, voice tends to be. That’s why very emotional Pop and Rock choruses work well in of terror essays, a higher note range. Speak the chorus lyric with as much emotion as you can put into it. Now, exaggerate the pitches, keeping the rhythm of the words and any pauses that occur naturally. This will get you started on your chorus. Once you’ve found the melody your lyric naturally suggests, then sit down with your guitar or keyboard and start roughing out the chords.
I like to record my vocal ideas before I even start to add chords, that way I can recall the original “spoken word” melody in case I want to go back to concept, it. Of course, there are other ways to write a song melody but this one will give you a great place to start. Writing both lyrics and salem trial melody. If you play guitar or keyboard and you’re going to be writing your own melody and concept writing chords. Skip down to the crossing, the next section for some ideas on how to find and use chord progressions that work well for today’s songs. Work on the melody and writing chords using the salem paper, verse and chorus lyric you have, gradually smoothing and changing until you have something you like. Then write the rest of the concept essay, lyric to the final melody. If you’re going to be looking for a collaborator to put music to acid essay, your lyrics, then you should go ahead and finish the lyric now. Filling in the rest of the writing essay, lyric while sustaining the emotional tone of what you’ve done is a tough job but if you’ve gotten this far, you can do the rest.
IMPORTANT TIP ON RHYMING: Don’t twist words out of order or write a line just to reign essays, make something rhyme! A ‘vowel rhyme’ — rhymes like love/enough or mine/time/sigh with the same vowel sound but different final consonants — will work just fine for concept writing, popular songs. (Songs for musical theater are different – they usually do require perfect rhymes.) Stop working! Go away and come back when you’re fresh. You’ll be able to see what needs to be fixed. Keep working on the lyric until you are genuinely moved and excited by it. A Few Essays That Worked (And a Few That Didn#8217;t) Jacques Steinberg, education correspondent for the Times, appears on writing the Today show to discuss what works in a college essay. By None None on Publish Date December 6, 2010. In preparation for a segment on NBC#8217;s #8220;Today#8221; show this morning, I reached out to the admissions offices at the University of Virginia and Occidental College in California for reign of terror, examples of essays that they considered memorable #8212; for good, or ill. Before I share some of these samples, a caveat (one familiar to writing essay, regular readers of this blog): while it can be instructive to read actual college admissions essays, trying to copy a particular approach #8212; or in some cases avoid it #8212; can be perilous. That#8217;s because how one responds to an essay can be an intensely personal experience. That said, I would argue that there are some basic lessons to be gleaned from the paper images following examples. Here, for instance, is an excerpt from an essay that was not especially well received at writing, the University of use and of mobiles-essay Virginia, in part because the writer misjudged the age and sensibility of his or her audience: John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ was sung by Fox’s new show, #8216;Glee.#8217; In one particular episode, a deaf glee club performed this song.
I heard it before when John Lennon sang it: unfortunately I did not care much for it. When I watched this episode while the deaf adolescents were singing it, and soon joined by another glee club, it surprisingly affected me#8230; John Lennon sang it like a professional, but what he did not have was the concept writing essay emotion behind the words. He sang it more staccato than legato. Salem Trial Paper! He sang it like it was his job, and nothing more. These singers from writing essay, Glee sang with powerful emotions. … Another essay, also musical in focus, got a more appreciative read at U.V.A.: I strode in front of 400 frenzied eighth graders with my arm slung over my Fender Stratocaster guitar — it actually belonged to reign, my mother — and launched into the first few chords of Nirvana’s ‘Lithium.’ My hair dangled so low over my face that I couldn’t see the concept essay crowd in use and, front of me as I shouted ‘yeah, yeah’ in my squeaky teenage voice. I had almost forgotten that less than a year ago I had been a kid whose excitement came from waiting for the next History Channel documentary. It was during the awkward, hormonal summer between seventh and eighth grade when I first heard Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ The song shocked my senses — until that point my musical cosmos consisted mainly of my father’s Beatles CDs. I would argue that the admissions committee was able to writing, relate a little more to this essay than the first. Good Essay Your Dad! And it was certainly more evocative and detailed. It also conveyed more about the writer (and applicant) #8212; a crucial quality in a college admissions essay. I turn, now, to excerpts from a recent essay that struck a visceral chord within the admissions office at Occidental (where, as an essay, aside, President Obama began his college career): My head throbbed as I closed my eyes and good your dad tried to concept essay, convince myself to give up. Of Terror! ‘Come on, Ashley.
Put the pencil down. Essay! Just put the pencil down and go to bed,’ I told myself sternly. I had been hard at work for hours — brutal, mind-numbing hours. I groaned as I moved over to salem, my bed, collapsing in a pile of blankets and closing my eyes. I lay there for a moment or two, gathering strength, gaining courage. My tense shoulders began to unclench as I stretched out and opened my bleary eyes… Suddenly, I bolted upright on my bed, eyes wide, blankets flying. Everything had fallen into place.
I stumbled madly to my desk, thumped myself down, and snatched up my pencil. ‘I’ve got it! That’s it!’ I whooped, scribbling furiously, as my brother pounded on writing my wall for salem trial paper, silence. I had just won another skirmish in my ongoing battle with the writing crossword puzzle. What worked here? I#8217;m told the of terror admissions officers appreciated how the writer conveyed her love of words — and in the process told them much about herself. As a writer, I admired the concept writing essay way she built a sense of mystery at the outset, one that served to draw the reader in. Use And Misuse! I#8217;ll close with an attempt at concept essay, metaphor that fell a bit flat, at the crossing, least in its reception at writing essay, Occidental. The applicant writes: I believe in jello; a silly greeting, tasty dessert, or the answer to life as we know it? Factor #1: Have you ever tried to make jello? It takes patience.
First you have to boil the water; then mix it with powder, stirring for two minutes; then finally adding the cold water and putting it in the fridge for forty-five minutes. Think about the creation of people… To share your own thoughts on essay strategies #8212; and, perhaps, some excerpts of your own #8212; please use the witch trial comment box below. Comments are no longer being accepted. Although the essays chosen as the #8220;good#8221; examples are well-written, I found the concept writing other 2 more interesting. Each of those writers seemed to be struggling to express a concept instead of a fairly typical self-absorbed picture. Obviously. the #8220;good#8221; essays are easier to identify with, but they are also rather juvenile.
Our education system tends to reward the neat package, not the messy one. I#8217;d like to essay, think that both sets of essay writers deserve an excellent education. I saw this segment on the Today Show and I am surprised about the concept writing first essay. I understand the concept of acid essay Glee being a new show and seeming juvenile, but it isn#8217;t. I find the concept writing essay show rather creative for essay dad, taking older songs, modernizing them, and essay reintroducing them to use and misuse of mobiles-essay, a new generation of people.
Not to concept writing essay, mention it adds new life to a song already loved by the older generation who watch the show as well. Acid Essay! If anything it shows the blatant generation gap between the essay administrators and the students writing their essay. John Lennon was a great artist but it doesn#8217;t mean I#8217;m obligated to be a fan, nor is this student. People should respect the of terror essays difference of opinion. This student was honest enough to say he/she didn#8217;t like the essay song and why when performed by John Lennon, but found beauty in the song he/she previously dismissed when performed by a group of deaf children. I think that shows a strong sense of self in the student which was, unfortunately, overlooked. Thank you so much for these examples. I will note that the Jello essay uses semicolons improperly.
Grammar errors destroy credibility. I was accepted early decision to Virginia, and folks ask me all the time about my application essay. I wrote about the misuse of mobiles-essay single moment of shaking an concept, opponent#8217;s hand during a national debate tournament. I was terrified about this opponent, but when I shook his hand, it was cold, limp, and good essay your dad soaking wet. Knowing he was just as nervous as I changed everything for writing, me. Essay About Dad! I wanted to share with the writing application committee my revelation that I don#8217;t need to good essay about your, be intimidated by concept writing essay anyone. Acid Essay! My advice for future applicants: Ask yourself what #8220;gift#8221; your essay delivers to the reader. What#8217;s the pay-off for the audience? If you aren#8217;t writing with the audience in mind, the essay will seem self-indulgent. Thanks so much! This is the writing essay part of the application that should be removed.
Students that write their own essay are at a distinct disadvantage (unless they are among those students that truly do have talent in this area.) Because the stakes are so high and essay about the competition so great, more and concept writing essay more families are hiring consultants to use and of mobiles-essay, either write or heavily edit the essays. A consultant could definitely tidy up the Glee and the jello essay and make it relevant. At least we know that the Glee and jello essay writers received no assistance. Concept! Other than the most competitive schools is anyone reading the essays?? It seems that a well written essay if accompanied by low standard test scores gets ignored when in fact the essay is misuse a better example of concept what the essay student can do.
These students pour over every word as they see their future hanging in concept, the balance. Does the admissions committee at University of Maryland actually read the essay answers to the short answer questions? Do they read the essays? I find these examples and the ensuing comments to writing, be an example of just how subjective college admissions officers are when making their decisions. Witch! Some admissions essays must be objectively bad (poor grammar, incoherent prose, etc.) and writing essay I imagine that some must be objectively good, however, it seems to acid essay, me that the great bulk lie in the middle. In that middle ground then isn’t the merit of one’s essay inextricably tied to the taste’s of the writing essay admissions officers reviewing that essay? Would a brilliant essay by Hunter S. Thompson be tossed out because the reader hated drug use and essay non-conformity? Would an essay by Tom Wolfe be rejected because the reader hated exclamations? Oh my! Maybe that great 18th century wordsmith Charles Dickens pamphlet would be considered too word?
Or Hemingway’s to sparse? What I found so troubling about the admissions cycle when I went through it a decade ago was how arbitrary decisions seemed to be at the top schools. It always seemed to me that once you were in a pool of qualified applicants (good grades, test scores, extra-curricular activities) that admissions came down to chance. Writing Essay! I was admitted to the #1 US New School but admissions at a half a dozen lesser ranked schools where I had GPAs and the crossing essay SATs over concept writing essay, the 75% mark. Some friends were admitted everywhere they applied, one friend was denied admission everywhere he applied but his in-state safety school despite the fact that he had mid 1500s SATs, a 4.0 GPA and founded our schools Environment Club. I’ve never figured out why that happened, I doubt there’s a simple answer. The college a person attends doesn’t define them or set them on a fixed course through life. Nevertheless, it is important and it does matter.
In fact it matters tremendously to misuse, those students and concept writing parents who struggle through courses and bills to make their dreams of education a success, and that’s why it is so terrifying that chance and subjectivity play such a large role in the college admissions process. The purpose of the essay is to of terror essays, reveal something personal about concept essay yourself to the admissions committee that isn#8217;t conveyed elsewhere in the application. The first essay didn#8217;t work because it was analysis of the salem witch research merits of two versions of essay a song. I#8217;m surprised that the crossword puzzle essay was offered as an acid essay, essay that worked #8212; it seems unoriginal, forced, overly dramatic, self-coscious. I read plenty of concept essay those as an admissions officer. The debate one worked because it revealed the author as an essays, observant, empathetic and mature person. And for writing essay, jello #8212; I think that could have been a very funny essay with some good editing, and perhaps may have revealed the reign author as a quirky kid with a good sense of writing essay humor. I agree with lp#8217;s analysis. It should be drummed into the crossing every applicant: whatever the subject, the concept writing essay real point is to provide a sense of yourself. Unless you are some kind of salem trial research paper master stylist, writing about #8220;other things#8221; will not impress #8212; and even superlative style might very well be lost on an admissions officer who is, after all, looking for a reason to make a decision #8212; any decision #8212; about your application. Essay! I too think the crossword puzzle essay seems silly and forced, but I also think the trial other musical essay was trite and forced.
I am afraid that this is writing essay what the of terror essays admissions process has reduced essay writing to. Essay! With the exception of the second entry, (the Nirvana kid), the rest fell flat. He seemed to convey his thoughts fluidly, and in the manner that he was thinking them. The first entry was of paper images minor interest#8230; but obvioulsy didn#8217;t achieve what it was intended to achieve. The third was simply terrible. Enough said. The fourth had redeeming value. There are multiple purposes for the essay.
One is to guage an applicant#8217;s ability to write. Concept Essay! Fortunately, many employers, like The Times, still value this ability. If your child does not #8220;have a talent#8221; in this area, he/she needs to get to work. Good Essay About Your! More important, if a consultant writes an applicant#8217;s essay, that applicant is cheating. Your answer implies that it is acceptable for a student to do so. It is concept no more acceptable for a consultant to write the essay than it is for a student to exaggerate in her list of extracurricular activities. Salem Witch! The essay is important and valuable and writing should remain a part of the application process. It#8217;s not the topic, or it#8217;s generational relationship to the reader, it#8217;s the writing, Sentence structure, organization, rhetorical flourish; the good essays have all three of these.
The poor essays just needed some editingor, in some cases, a lot of editing. The College Application Essay is use and misuse of mobiles-essay one of the best ways to concept writing essay, introduce yourself to the Admissions Committee but must be done with care or it will reduce your chances for admission. Certainly there is a lot of use and good advice out there, yet it seems hard to believe that by the time a student reaches 17 or 18 years old, they need help with writing a 250-500 word essay! I#8217;ve worked with teens applying to concept writing, college for several years now, guiding them through the process, and yes, helping to write their essays. Believe me, they need it! Please realize that just over 26% of kids are now receiving professional guidance with their essays and college applications. Reign Essays! Why? Competition has increased dramatically; a combination of demographics and writing the simplicity of The Common Application has contributed to the average student now sending out 10 or more applications! Assume that most kids will have similar GPA#8217;s, SAT#8217;s and salem trial a noteworthy background in athletics, music or some other passion when applying to a particular school#8230;..what really differentiates him or her?
The essay and a personal interview. Some schools do not offer interviews and more and more schools are adding supplemental essays to their applications to weed out the writing students that may not be all that serious about attending their school, even if they are accepted! Colleges are businesses with expenses and payrolls and endowments to consider. Use every tool you have to write a great essay, but grades and SAT scores still trump the. essays unless you can guarantee you#8217;ll bring them their first ever College Golf Championship! (Might be a good topic to write about!) Write a very interesting narrative that people will want to read and not put down until they have read the very last word! Write to your audience#8230;#8230;do not write about the time you got caught doing something illegal and brag about your brillant negotiating skills with the police and how you managed to avoid being arrested! Forget humor unless you are a professional comic#8230;#8230;very hard to convey a funny story#8230;#8230;.sometimes you really need to the crossing, have been there! Finally, have lots of people read it, and if it#8217;s not excellent, just very good, do it again! Its that important! Good Luck Everyone January 1st Deadline is coming fast!
Is post number 12 an advertisement? Its seems like an awful lot of private college admissions #8220;counselors#8221; use the comments sections of this blog to justify their services. For the record I agree with the Curmudgeon, having a consultant write your college application for you is cheating. Its fine to concept, have some help, but the majority of the the crossing essay work and the essay#8217;s #8220;voice#8221; should be the student#8217;s. As a further aside, who is to say that these advisors actually improve the essays.
I#8217;m not a professional writer and writing essay I don#8217;t work in good essay about dad, admissions, but I find #8220;Highly Competitive Essays'#8221; use of exclamation points to be excessive. Hi The Curmudgeon (#10), Post #12 confirms my point. Concept! If one fourth of the kids are receiving paid help, that puts the rest of the applicants at a distinct disadvantage. You would be very surprised to find out just how many people are hiring consultants to write these essays. I absolutely do not mean to infer that it is acid essay acceptable to writing essay, cheat. I only good essay your dad mean to say that it creates an concept writing essay, unfair playing field. Salem Witch Research Paper! Until the colleges can figure a way to make it fair, I think the essay should be removed. Concept! Students can submit graded English assignments instead. I remember the kind of person that I was as a teenager and know that if I had to write a college essay, it would have been the jello one. In addition, I liked the Glee/Lennon essay because I wanted to know what she was going to say about the former Beatle.
On the contrary, I lost interest in the 2nd music essay and skimmed over the crossword one (the so-called good essays). As a CUNY applicant in 1979-80, I didn#8217;t need to complete an application essay. However, as a student years later (20-30 years later to be exact), my writing matured and I have won academic honors and one scholarship for my writing (I graduated from a state school). Of Mobiles-essay! I love writing and couldn#8217;t imagine my life without it (although I write for pleasure, not publication). By the way, my SAT scores were also low but I received a Bachelor#8217;s at 43 and a Master#8217;s (4.0 GPA) at 46. I currently have my dream job, introducing books to children. Essay! So there, admission officers! Consider reading the book(s) ESSAYS THAT WORKED; every admissions officer does.
My son wrote his essays for his AP English class at a top high school as an assignment. The #8220;prompts#8221; are known about in summer, so making it a part of use and AP English in fall was easy especially since many students applied to essay, UC and the crossing essay the private colleges routinely and it boasts a 95% college rate. They went through several reviews and revisions. And by the end they worked well. Concept Essay! He got into UCLA that was his first choice. After that experience, my daughter put together her essays easily with my son#8217;s input. She ran them by her college English and History instructors (she went entirely the community college route in paper, lieu of concept high school). She got into reign essays Berkeley that was her first choice. I believe that students who don#8217;t have diligent and involved English instructors who are willing to make these college essays a part of their curriculum or personal time are at a significant disadvantage. Even though the essay is written by the student and in the student#8217;s voice, these professionals pointed out flaws that needed correction and concept writing essay reinforced the good dad prompt questions. And in subsequent university courses, the concept writing essay care of your dad these instructors is evident in any courses where my kids must write an writing, essay.
They had a lasting impression. I would wish other student would get this guidance. I feel that these essays were #8220;first drafts#8221; with ideas but no guidance to refine them. So as a means to judge students, it really only shows the schools and students who have caring instructors and follow through on their suggestions and those who may lack such resources. That comment read like an ad! But guess what. Even ads can have too many exclamation points! If I was an admissions reader, I#8217;d be exhausted by all of those bangs! Please, please, please, spare us the ads in the comments! Btw, the crossword essay was stylistically hackneyed!
This is an use and of mobiles-essay, interesting article. These next few weeks certainly are critical for college applications! On the essay side of concept writing things, I#8217;ve found the site theEssayExchange.com, really helpful in assisting my daughter with building her essay. I believe the research importance of college application essays are overblown here. You cannot expect engineering students to write as eloquently as liberal arts students. The jello essay may have been written by essay an engineering student while the crossword puzzle essay by the crossing essay a liberal arts student. I hope colleges are not just looking for good writers. Concept Writing Essay! This country needs great engineers too! And you are not going to be impressed by reign of terror essays many of their college app essays.
I agree with seachange. Cheating is unjustifable, but we all know it happens. Besides consultants, friends, siblings and parents have been known to write students#8217; essays. There is little chance to cheat on an SAT/ACT test or an AP/IB exam; these results, along with the transcript, should be given more weight. Yet every autumn it is the essay that causes the most anxiety. My son and concept writing essay I brainstormed for weeks before he came up with a suitable topic to write about. Then it took him another a few weeks to the crossing essay, write and edit his essay. I would hate to see his four years of hard work and concept writing essay excellent grades/test results wasted because the admissions committee at his number one school was not intrigued by good essay about dad his essay. Especially if someone with lower grades and test results is admitted on the basis of an essay which they did not write. We are told that admissions counselors can tell the difference between an concept essay, essay written by reign of terror a high school student and one by an adult. Concept! I hope they really can.
Personally, I feel the essay is important to give a #8220;face#8221; to the crossing essay, the applicant. The rest of the concept writing essay application is a listing of grades, scores and extracurriculars (which can easily be embellished) but the acid essay essay is supposed to be the student#8217;s voice. I agree with another poster that sending in a graded English assignment is a good alternative. These examples demonstrate the importance of teaching our kids to communicate effectively, not only through the written word, but also through speaking. If kids can#8217;t communicate their ideas through proper grammar techniques and through content, admissions officers have a difficult time deciding if they are an appropriate match for the school.
Communication is key in concept essay, all fields. The kids who wrote the lesser essays may be amazing people, but they failed to communicate it. Glenda. Use And! I am often asked how to compose memorable application essays out of “ordinary” teenage lives. High school seniors who haven’t won international awards or lived on houseboats or in homeless shelters can feel as if their essays have little to offer. They’re terrified that they will make the concept essay same “mistakes” that are highlighted here in of terror, “The Choice” (and no wonder … even Ian admissions professional for three decadeshad a tough time differentiating between the “good” and “bad” ones!). I always reply that, during my 15 years of reading application essays at Smith College, many of the most memorable submissions were on mundane topics. One of my all-time favorites was about a laundry mishap at a summer school. Concept! The author explained how she had accidentally washed her roommate’s expensive white undergarments with her own red sweatshirt. Of course, the essay wasn’t really just about laundry … it was more about the of mobiles-essay boundaries of friendship. Writing! Other wonderful essays I recall include a hilarious one on playing in a truly terrible school band and use and of mobiles-essay another called “Why I Shop at Wal-Mart.” While there are lots of books out there that serve up samples of “successful” essays, there are two that I especially like that offer helpful suggestions on how to craft your own. #8220;On Writing The College Application Essay: Secrets of a former Ivy League Admissions Officer,#8221; by Harry Bauld (which I’ve recommended for eons) and a newcomer called, #8220;Concise Advice: Jump-Starting Your College Admissions Essays,#8221; by writing essay Robert Cronk, both lead students through the composition process and never lose sight of the fact that 17-year-olds can rarely report triumphs—or traumas—that might help their essays stand out in a crowd.
Admission officials really DO want to read about their applicants’ experiences, no matter how “typical,” and they are eager to view them through the writers’ eyes. Students shouldn’t ever worry that they have nothing cataclysmic to chronicle. After all, what could be more #8220;ordinary#8221; than laundry? I would say that the applicant who wrote the #8220;Imagine#8221; essay didn#8217;t get due to the essay#8217;s flat prose, poor organization, and questionable grammar, not its subject matter. The song was not sung #8220;by the show,#8221; but by the characters on the show. The sentence #8220;When I watched this episode while the research paper deaf adolescents were singing it, and soon joined by another glee club, it surprisingly affected me#8230;#8221; is just an incredible mess.
He didn#8217;t watch #8220;while#8221; they were singing; it should be #8220;were joined by;#8221; and #8220;surprisingly affected me#8221; is writing essay a terribly clumsy construction. How about: #8220;As I watched another glee club join the deaf adolescents in singing the song during this episode, I was surprised by how much it affected me.#8221; Not all applicants will be strong writers, but all need to show at least a basic grasp of how to communicate a thought.

During the First World War and the Second World War most of the same nations were pitted against each other. To some, this made it seem like one long war, with a 20-year lull between fighting.
At stake was the mastery of the world. Writing Essay. But the of terror essays final outcome was not what many of the leading players on either side would have hoped for-or expected. In seeking to defend or increase their power, Britain, France and Germany lost their dominant position to concept, the United States and Soviet Russia. ( The World Wars: an Introduction to the First Second World Wars , p. 6, Bibliography Section book #5) The First World War was fought on such a massive scale that people called it the Great War. Never before had any war been fought on so many battlefields, with such a vast array of powerful and destructive weapons, and of terror essays resulted in so many deaths. The War was a human tragedy on a global scale. It began in Europe, but countries from concept essay, around the world were soon dragged into the fighting. The war lasted for acid essay four dark years and a staggering 65 million men were mobilized to fight.
Over 21 million people died, including 13 million civilians. The terrible impact of the war sparked revolutions, toppled once-great empires and concept changed the political map of Europe forever. Essays. ( The World Wars: an writing, Introduction to the First Second World Wars , p. 9, Bibliography Section book #5) World War II was the most catastrophic conflict in history. Almost every continent on Earth was drawn into its fiery cauldron. Fought between two opposing alliances, known as the the crossing essay Allies and the Axis, the war began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.

Customer Loyalty – What is writing it? How Can You Measure and Manage It? Customers make decisions about the crossing essay where to spend their time, money, and effort every day. Concept Essay. In either case, the scenario is always the same for the seller – to make their product or service offering the preferred choice. Salem Witch. They do this by building offers that will:
Differentiate them from competitors Generate significant demand by writing essay customers Demonstrate superior value Build customer loyalty. It is good essay about your a fallacy to concept writing, assume that a customer is about loyal just because they continue to buy from you. There are many reasons why a customer repeats purchasing which have little to do with being really loyal. Writing Essay. Consider the following: There is a contractual arrangement with your company It takes too much effort or money to change suppliers You are currently the low cost provider Their relationship is with one of your employees and not with your company Habits are hard to break They may actually be in the process of finding an alternative supplier. If any of the above is the case, what do you think is likely to essay, happen should a desirable competitor come around and seek out your customer’s business? The easier and more attractive they make it for the customer to switch, the less appealing the above reasons are. Customer loyalty is far more than repeat business. Loyalty can be defined as a customer continuing to believe that your organization’s product/service offer is their best option.
It best fulfills their value proposition whatever that may be. They take that offer whenever faced with that purchasing decision . Moreover, loyalty means hanging in concept writing essay, there even when there may be a problem. This occurs because the organization has been good to them in the past and addresses issues when they arise. It means that they do not seek out competitors and, when approached by competitors, are not interested. It also means being willing to reign of terror, spend the time and effort to communicate with the organization so as to build on past successes and concept essay, overcome any weaknesses. In a nutshell, loyalty means a customer wants to use and, do business with you and does. The challenge for writing organizations is taking this definition and misuse of mobiles-essay, translating it into actual practice, where specific actions are defined and ideal customer relationships are envisioned. It also means identifying a means for concept writing essay taking this loyalty construct and putting it into measurable terms so that success and failure can be assessed and progress or decline tracked.
Customer Loyalty can be Measured and Monitored. Loyal customers believe the products and services purchased from their supplier are superior to those of the competition. Frequently, they are customers who view their interactions as more than simply transactional . They believe there is a relationship that is bigger than just the products or services they buy. Research Images. Measuring loyalty means measuring the strength of this relationship between buyer and writing, seller, between the organization and use and misuse of mobiles-essay, its customer. It is writing essay challenging to measure the level of customer loyalty within the relationship, which is witch research why companies so often succumb to simply defining loyalty as the essay, number of trial research purchases made or a continuing pattern of buy behavior. And asking the customer directly about whether or not they are ‘loyal’ does not provide a valid measure. Customers will often say they are loyal – simultaneously– to multiple providers. What we are looking at concept writing essay is measuring those attitudes as well as behaviors that we know make up this concept of loyalty. For example, some of the important attitudes and behaviors expected of a loyal customer include: Likelihood to recommend your products and services to others Likelihood to continue purchasing your products and services, at minimum, at the same level Likelihood of purchasing other products and services you offer Believing your products and services are superior to others offered in acid essay, the marketplace Not actively seeking alternative providers to writing essay, replace you Providing your company with opportunities to correct problems and not using these as a basis for compromising the relationship.
Based on customers’ responses to questions such as these as well as others that evaluate specific aspects of their relationship with your company, a loyalty profile of your customers can be created. Loyalty segments categorize customers as Loyal, Neutral and Vulnerable. The basis for loyalty segmentation should be sufficiently flexible in of terror, that it recognizes and accounts for the uniqueness and special challenges of writing essay any one business or organization as well as the research, environment in in which it competes. And yet must also be based on sound, well-tested research principles and validated modeling. Business success means having desirable customers who are strongly tied to your organization. Concept Writing. Monitoring the number/percent of your customers in the Loyal segment and doing what it takes to increase loyal customers while decreasing those who are vulnerable should provide the focus of images any organization. Profiling Loyalty Segments. Once the customer loyalty segments are formed, complete profiling based on meaningful customer descriptors, is provided. (Such information is usually available from organizations’ customer databases and other internal customer data sources). Comparison of the segments across the loyalty profile can reveal significant – and concept writing, potentially valuable – differences which would otherwise have remained hidden.
The example shown here is salem trial paper a business to writing essay, business customer loyalty profile. Note that the diversity across loyalty types is not unusual. For this company, it was very helpful to learn, for instance, that their West coast customers were far more vulnerable. While at a very early point in their analysis, this finding — coupled with the market share potential– suggested the possible need for organizational restructuring. But demographic and descriptive profiling is the crossing essay just part of the information required for organizations to manage customer loyalty. Organizations need to know why loyalty segments exist – why are some customers loyal and others vulnerable or just plain in between neutral towards you? And they need to concept writing essay, hear this information directly from the customer – not management’s best guesses or gut level feelings. Without customer input, organizations are held hostage to a loyalty goal that has no answers. Understanding the salem paper, Loyalty Segments.
So what causes one customer to be loyal and another to be almost out the concept essay, door? The creation of the loyalty segments assigns each customer to a segment but does not provide any explanation as to why they are in that particular segment. To implement change that is directed towards improving customer loyalty — in acid essay, other words to manage loyalty – requires in-depth understanding of: Customers’ underlying preferences for the products/services being considered What customers value in those products and services under consideration Customers’ experiences, perceptions, and beliefs about the organization itself as well as about its products and essay, services – particularly in areas that are highly valued. The Loyalty Research Center has developed a model that describes how daily interactions (as perceived by the customer) between customer and provider will ultimately drive overall company perceptions and lead to attitudes of loyalty (or not) and behavior. Applying this loyalty model to individual companies requires breaking down the customer relationship into its various aspects – starting with day to day activities and ending with important attitudes, known to influence loyalty. Identification of the crossing organization-specific model elements generally begins with an Investigative Phase . Concept Writing. This phase identifies all potentially relevant reasons for customer loyalty and becomes the acid essay, basis for subsequent qualitative measurement. Understanding how customers perceive all aspects of concept writing essay company performance and quantifying the impact of of mobiles-essay each on overall customer loyalty is vital to concept, identifying critical actions to take. The basic model elements appear in the accompanying diagram and represent these interactions, experiences and attitudes that ultimately drive your businesses’ success. In addition to gathering performance feedback and perceptions, customers are asked to share any problems they may have experienced, as well as the extent to which they were resolved. The following table includes actual results for the crossing one company.
Note that several pieces of important information are included: Loyalty impact priority, performance ratings (ratings of Excellent and Very Good ), and problem experience for each Loyalty Segment: From this one chart, there were many learnings our client gathered; but first and foremost they learned that… “Loyal customers’ experiences and concept writing, perceptions are distinct from those of Neutral customers. There is yet an even greater gap between those identified as Loyal versus Vulnerable.” Here are just a few of reign essays this client’s discoveries: Problems are experienced and remain unresolved far more often by the Vulnerable segment in comparison to others. Concept Essay. Loyal customers have a low percentage of misuse outstanding problems. Writing. This is not an unusual finding. Note that it is acid essay not zero. Interactions are listed in priority order in essay, terms of their impact on loyalty. It was a surprise to use and misuse, find that Order cycle time carries the impact that it does and that it scores so weakly across all segments, but especially among vulnerable customers. Other areas of interaction also revealed considerable differences among the segments. Consistently, Loyal customers’ perceptions are most positive.
Also noted by concept our client was the fact that the majority of customers did not fall into the Loyal category! The previous chart provides just an inkling of the rich information that is potentially available from customers. As in the case above, companies are likely to find vast differences among their customer loyalty segments in terms of paper perceptions, experiences, and attitudes. Essay. The question now becomes – What do you do with all this good information? Undoubtedly, the of mobiles-essay, first thing to do is to understand why differences exist. Variations among segments can be the writing, result of: Inconsistent levels of service and/or product quality provided Customers have different priorities Customer needs or expectations vary.
In each of these cases – whether it be actual performance differences on the part of the provider, or different demands on the part of the customer, customer loyalty levels are likely to misuse of mobiles-essay, be affected. In the first two scenarios, the provider is concept writing able to essay, self-correct by concept focusing on those areas of weaker performance – especially where it counts the most – as revealed in the customer feedback results. However, if customers’ needs/expectations are sufficiently different from what the provider is capable of offering, then improving the performance of current offerings may not be the answer. A provider’s business model may not coincide with the use and misuse of mobiles-essay, demands of every customer segment. Needs-based segmentation technique will be required to concept essay, determine whether or not you are serving the wrong customers for acid essay your business model. Needs-based segmentation is discussed in a separate piece. For now, let’s assume a simpler scenario where all customers have similar needs and the actions to concept, take are related to acid essay, performance improvement. Using the earlier example, we know that their actions focused on: Increasing the base of loyal customers Improving weaker areas of greatest importance to customers across the board Reviewing identification of specific customers in writing essay, the Loyal and Vulnerable segment Determining which customers are most important – to the business- and assuring that their performance concerns were addressed. A plan to increase the base of loyal customers was put into place along with specific targets. Their message out to the entire company was: Overall, results clearly point to of terror essays, the fact that while the Loyal segment generally scores highest across the board, it is also true that Loyal customer scores could be even better. In no area do all Loyal customers give either an Excellent or Very Good rating. Or, how about writing essay setting an the crossing essay, expectation for reaching all Excellent? Special, targeted efforts to essay, achieve the above were designed, sometimes, around each identified loyal customer. There were also plans to use and, further investigate which customers fell into the Neutral or Vulnerable groups. That, in turn, helped determine next actions. What would it take to concept writing essay, address a Vulnerable customer’s specific concerns and was the effort worth it? It was important that improvement efforts were considered reasonable given the desirability of that customer to their business. As a general rule, a good plan of action includes reviewing (especially within the Vulnerable segment) lower performing areas with an eye toward the following:
Customers – Are these the wrong customers for your business? Are there customers who do not value the business model under which your organization operates? Competition – Are some customer perceptions being driven by what others are able to provide within or outside this industry? How are our competitors able to provide a better experience? Migrating Loyalty Segments. The ultimate goal of writing your actions should not only be improvement of performance perceptions but, in the end, increasing the percentage of your customers who are loyal to your company/organization. Why increase your percentage of loyal customers?
Go back to trial research, the first table and look at the annual revenue spend. Concept Essay. In this example the Loyal customer segment spends an average of about $6,000 – $8,000 per year more than the other segments. While not shown here, annual profit margins are typically higher as well. A customer loyalty migration plan is called for. Customer loyalty migration requires strategies that will move lower level loyalty segments to higher levels, while maintaining and protecting loyal segment members.

What level of resourcing is required today? What will it take to improve their perceptions and either migrate this customer to concept, the next segment level or for the loyal customer, maintain their loyalty? Migrating customers to the next level usually means adding more or different resources, but only at appropriate levels – the right amount, on the right things, for the right customers. Paper Images. It does not mean losing money in concept writing, the process. An appropriate migration plan for a high revenue but costly Vulnerable customer may be one of out migration. Unless companies regularly seek input from their customers – by using objective and valid measurement tools and techniques – they really know very little about them.
